View Full Version : Why Is the Lighting Effects Filter Not Selectable

First post....Hello All!

I am just trying to figure out how to use the ligting effects filter. I am in RGB mode as required, and I can only use lighting filters on my background layer, not the layers above it. This is especially confusing because I am doing a tutorial, and the people that made the tutorial apparently had no issue selecting the lighting filter. The layer I need to light up is a clipping path.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The filter can be used on clipping paths no problem.

Just be sure that it's not a Vector shape layer.
And also, and i know this may sound like a no-brainer but... make sure you have clicked on the target layer to make it the 'active' layer. I've seen this situation before more than you'd think. ;)

If you can post a screenshot of your layers palette (at the time of attempting to use the filter) it may reveal more detail to go on here. Also a link to that tute may be helpful too.

I can only use lighting filters on my background layer, not the layers above it.What do these layers above contain? Consider to post the link to this tutorial so that we can have a look at it. Now we're just guessing. :)

Well the tutorial is in a book and it is for PS7. Unfortunately I don't connect my design pc to the internet, so I will have to screen cap and then burn the image to a cd when I have actual cdr's.

Perhaps I can't use the effect because I am attempting to light up a vector shape.... I'm on CS, and the tutorial is for 7, so I guess that could very well be it. I can still get around it by copying the shape and pasting it into a new doc on a layer by itself... but I am more concerned now with figuring out what went wrong instead of just working around it. Thanks for the replies, I will get a screen capture up soon.

Perhaps I can't use the effect because I am attempting to light up a vector shape If that's what you're doing then that's your problem right there. Just dupe the shape layer and Rasterize the dupe, then apply the filter as stated in the tute. You always have the original vector shape should you need it.

You can apply the lighting effect to a shape layer by adding a 50% gray layer on top:

Alt+click on New Layer icon and select softlight (or any other blending mode you prefer) + check Fill with 50%gray. This way you can keep the shape layer intact. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
