View Full Version : Knife renders
H3rbie 10-17-2002, 04:26 PM Done this as sort of a texturing/lighting "experiment". My dad, who does knifes in his spare time had a drawing of a future project and wanted me to visualize it in 3D. Quite happy with the renderings although some stuff like AA on the reflections could be better.

I think it looks very nice, I'm sure your father will be pleased. Heck, if you added a bit of DOF, it could be a promotional pic for his craft.
I think the sheath could use a bit of work regarding materials. Perhaps I am unfamiliar with the subastance of which it is made(looks almost like deer skin). A specular map might ad a bit of visual interest to it, though I don't know if the sheath is waxed or not.
All in all, really nice job.

I think it looks good for the most part. I agree with you on the AA on the reflection on the second image. Also in the third image there is something odd with the lack of shadow at the end of the sheath. It doesn't look like the sheath is near on on that ground plane. I also agree with a having another specular on the sheath.

The texture on the handle is bleeding on the bottom edge (apparant in 1st render pic). Otherwise super sharp work :P

I don't know much about knifes, but the first render looks exactly like a steak knife, whats the difference?

you might want to add some maps besides the flat color maps you have a spec map can add a little to any object and can be very helpfull in pushing a image just that little bit further also dirt maps can be useful though less subtle bump maps ect... reflection map for the knife blade and hadel a hdri for your enviroment map can add lots

Thanks guys!
Zastrozzi: Haha, this is supposed to be a hunting knife so I guess there isnt much difference at all, perhaps only that the blade is a bit thicker than on a steak knife....
Tellerve: Ye, the second image just lack something that gives it that "reality" look.
3Dzealot: I dont really know what the sheath is made of, I just scanned in the material my dad is gonna use.....the sheath will not be waxed so there wont be any specular stuff on it, although it might help make the images more belieavable.
I think I will, when I have time make an enviroment for this image, but im currently workin on another project......:hmm:

:-) I wasn't sugesting that you creat an enviroment I was sugesting that you sue an enviroment map (image ) to make your metal more beleivable because that way the reflections on it would vary
