hi,

uhmm...i'm not sure if i should dare ask this question, it's really basic :-) but i don't seem to find any help anywhere else...

ok, i've drawn two pics (one front, one side) for modeling purposes and now i want to assign them to image planes in the front and side view...BUT: the planes do not correspond to each other meaning that the front view plane is bigger than the side view one... i can't find a logical solution to this since my pics are both 340 pixels in height (width is 435 on the one pic and 378 pixels on the other)...WHAT am i doing wrong??

thanks for any help

what i did was i loaded up my image planes in photoshop..

and i put the windows side by side... zoomed in both to about 50 percent so i could see everything, and then i started to increase the image size of the smaller of the two... i just did it by eye.. i spose if you were photoshop inclined you could use transparent layers and put one on top of the other... but i just kept changing the size of the smaller one untill everything was as close as i could get it by just looking at it.. that was what i did =)

hi MaDSheeP,

well, i did the same, at least with the height of my pictures (and that's what really matters in this case...so i didn't care about the width), but my problem is right within Maya...

i want to assign my front-pic to an image plane in the frontview and my side-pic to the side-view...but the problem is: the two image planes are not the same size...which means they are totally useless for modeling coz front and side are not equal in height...

what can i do? i never modeled with drawings in the viewports before (the few things that i had to model could be made from scratch...) so i have really no idea what's going on

To make them the same size, make them the same width and height to begin with. In your case open the pic with the smaller width in PS and adjust it's canvas size. Make the canvas width the same as the larger pic.

Also, because image planes are accelerated by hardware, you really should make them square powers or 2. 256x256, 512x512, 512x256, something along those lines. Having image planes at odd resolutions can drasticly affect your viewport performance.

thanks mcronin, i'll try that out!

but i'm still not sure how maya computes the size of the image planes... i mean, one could assume that they are exactly the same width-height-ratio as the source pics. but then, maybe this is just another annoying (at least to me) maya quirk :-)

thanks again for your help

if you have broadband.. or even if you don't you can still download the smaller versions.. check this out.. its a Maya tutorial video on doing exactly what you are doing :)

http://www.gnomononline.com/modeling.html

its the only 'freebie' tutorial you get ;)
