No work-around needed... select your verts, then polygon menu--> Split Poly. (CTRL-L) Done..

This is probably because the poly you're trying to cut doesn't share the fifth vertex the adjacent polygon has (the one half way down the edge). Try selecting the vertex and move it around to test if this is true. You'll probably see the plane tearing. You have to make sure the poly you want to cut contains the verts you're splitting from.
You could rebuild the poly by deleting the original one and selecting the verts one by one in a clock-wise fashion and hitting P. Make sure it's normal is facing the correct way. Then try another Poly-split and you'll see it'll work this time. Edge slice would also work...

ups you are right , the vertex wasn't part of the poly. kind of embarrassing :)

thanks again

Why can't you use the "edge slice tool"? (or whatever slicing tool)

well there is no reason , i just started to switch to modo. The edge slice tool works even better .

thx

I think this is one of the most important tool available in Modo

Plus if you have some unwanted or double vertexes to remove , you can switch to the vertex tab and use one of the tools available , such as:"join" "join average" "split vertex" or "merge"(or just select points and kill them !) or whatever you need is there! )(Modo is great!)

Bye
