I have an obsession with samurai so i am thinking of doing something along those lines. It is rather simple concept but i will enjoy doing it. I have never modeled anything like this before i cant wait. I think im going to watch 'the last samuria' for research:thumbsup:

These are a couple on images i just googled to get me started. Some amazing details. please in no way think that because i am doing samurai steel that you cannot, that way we can bounce ideas off each other.

You can never have to much reference material, it only helps!

and some descriptive details to work from, i always lack structure :hmm:

see I'm like you I love these weapons, I would love to know how to do the blades tho, those are the one things I could never do right. all mine are pretty much straight. How do you do the curve with the...I don't know what it would be called...the sharp side? I've trying drawing the curve in the 'curved design' but then getting the sharp side is what gets me. any suggestions? any tutorials out there to show how that's done?

great sword btw It looks so real.

tugmaster im sure i will see you in your WIP thread!

Taria, i dont know how to do those blades (yet, im going to have to learn fast) but i suggest you start your own WIP thread and enter this comp. you are going to get all the answers you need there!

My 3 boys take Karate and Iaido locally, when they saw the image you have been working on, they all wanted to order at least one. So I had to break the bad news to them. But the image is beautiful to say the least.

good luck on creating your chosen weapons!
there is a specific technique for creating a decent KATANA blade:
basically create a set of curves outlining you katana blade shape....

then to either side of that first curve set..create an outer shape of the blade....basically a slightly smaller version of your main blade shape....

you will end up with three curve sets......make sure each set of curves is joined into one curve...then LOFT the entire group to create your blade!
NOTE...i always work wider and fatter than the blade will actually be...it makes LOFTING easier....you can always scale your blade once it is lofted!
http://www.forgefires.co.uk/katanablade.jpg

once your happy with your LOFT....select the outer curve sets..and user PLANER CURVES to create the sides of your blade....
GROUP the two sides and the middle section together and re'scale.....
http://www.forgefires.co.uk/katanablade1.jpg

obvisouly this technique will benefit from time and effort creating your curves and your loft! The more time you cand spend creating your curves and loft the better the end result will be! Blood channels etc can simply be added by creating a relevant curve along the blade then creating a pipe along that curve. add a sphere at the end of the pipe....then use SOLID> DIFFERENCE to cut the pipe and sphere shape out of your blade!

good luck! im looking forward to seing your work!

i never thought of loftign like that before, it certainly makes more sense! thanks for the tip. Im not to sure about the blade yet, i was thinking of adding some japanese characters into the blade as an engraving. And i hope that the blade wont be so simply crafted, no offense... lol. I just found out about a 3000 words essay i have to write up 3 days ( i thought i had another week) so i may no tbe posting to much but next week ill be working threw it for sure!

:D im am now so relaxed... i finnished my semester and went away for a weeks holiday, only breifly touched a computer the whole time im so happy.

i just jumped back into rhino then and found that i have a problem.. i cannot make a text object with japanese characters. > すぞ を突つけ 武力で脅し

its probably somehting simple and easy to fix but i have no tolerance for computer atm... i might go heat up the barbie instead.

Well one solution would be to type it in illustrator and do the "create outlines" function.
Or type it in Photoshop and export the paths.
then import the paths to rhino
