View Full Version : LowPoly Vehical: Esca-Bus
danRod 10-17-2002, 07:22 AM Hello guys!
havent posted any lowpoly stuff, so I thought I would give it a try and see what you guys think. (maybe find a job offer) This is a low poly bus/escalade I did as a test for a company. 2 maps:: one 256x256 and a 512x512 for the body. Poly count is 1490.
Modeled in max 4.2
Textured with PS7
Let me know what you guys think!!

One crit here...
I could have found better spots to include detail, rather then extruding in your windows.

A company in dallas, Stalker.
Here is the image I based used for refrence.

I thought the same thing. maybe more detail to the wheels or under side. But...I did that so, if needed, I could detatch those areas, refine the bordering area, and make transparent planes for the windows. But your right, i could do that definatly!

very kewl model I love it....and btw the bus actually has adjustable air suspension. It sits on the ground when its turned off and jacks up when you drive it.

I've seen that bus!! :) is it really an Escalade under there? Or just made to look like one?
danRod

Yeah I think it is just made to look like that, I dont think its and escalade. However, I would love to drive around in this baby though. Here is the map I made for the body, forgot to post this as well.

hehe great design & excecution!
I can't believe that bus is real! hahha
Everyone is concentrated on that model, when the real bus is the coolest thing :)
So i suppose that's how the kids in Cali get to school.

Nice workhttp://th_modalano.gif
Nice work! The bus has some bad curves around the wheel well.

Yeah...I think I will go back and touch up the wheel area then. add about 5 faces on each well area for the front. Good advice!

looks very good, so dont take anything i say the wrong way.
face count ... should be triangles.. more accurate.
wheels - should be refined more. its just a cylinder and if its just a cylinder it dont need to be that many faces. you should also refine the wheel well curves (already stated)
bottom - if you would of split it down the centerline you would not have to map the whole thing, map only half and mirror. This also brings up the 512x512 map. several parts could of been compressed more and this would of freed up more space (maybe enough to add the 256 stuff to the 512). as far as the tread goes... each of the faces could be mapped to a small section of the tread pattern ... lika so (ummm, how do you attach an image ??)
overall a great job on making it look like the orginal bus.

so you cant attach to a message your editing ...
here is a pic of a wheel for a SS camero (ignore the big truck tread pattern ;) )

actually, if you are using 3DSmax and if the model is an editable mesh, then it does not matter if you are using quads or higher polygons, it automatically brakes them down into triangles (internally) and gives you an accurate count.

Did not know that, thanks Marc

Sorry I didnt reply sooner. got tied up for a bit. First of all, thanks for the crits guys. Yeah...max automatically converts to tris when being an editable mesh.
The requirments for the map was a 128x128 for the wheels and the rest a 512x512 map. So I changed it a bit and made it 256x256 for the wheels and added the doors to that same map.
This allowed me to leave the bottom of the bus as a whole(cutting face count at the same time) and left me with the opportunity to give different scratches, scrapes and dirt to each side of the bottom so that it wouldnt have that mirrored look to the underside.
CADster: what do you mean each poly can be assigned to a section of the tread. Like a section of the tread is applyed to the whole tread of the actual wheel. Liked tiled a bit? If so, I was trying to give a map for the whole tread so it would look a bit different as it rotates, like as if it had run over some dirt or oil areas.
MODOLANO: I still think I should change the faceting of the wheel well in the front areas. The more I look at it the more I hear a voice in my head saying" add more poly's:surprised "

and thats fine ... but if you look at the model you can see that the treads are pretty much never seen, thats a lot of realestate to give something thats never seen (or only seen if it flips over). i was just giving tips on getting the same detail in less space.

I really don't have any crits,
I just thought I should post something at least because I'm right in love with that school bus.
Dude it rocks, I think it's just so unique compared to every other car (high poly or low poly) I see posted, not that I don't give credit to those other’s either…… but I can only look at so many Ferrari f-150's.
Great job man

CADster: I see what you mean now. I am all about deatil, and that would greatly allow me more room to add more detail to the textures. Thanks for the advice.
wasted weasel: Yeah I know what you mean, but those sleek, smooth designs are always a fun challenge to make. But you are right, alot have been made already and I would rather challenge my self to something different.
Thanks everyone for your crits. Greatly appreciated!!!!

damn that thing is real too? i thought it was just a cartoonish model :hmm:
but it looks good

Thanks Toope. Yeah I was pretty shoked when I saw the ref. pic for the first time. Although, I have been wondering lately......if you look at the original picture, (the one that I used for refrence) you can see some faceting around the rim/wheel well of the front tire. I know cars aren't like this. I thinks it might be fake:lightbulb . You never know, especially with all these kick a@@ cars rendered out of light wave lately, like the mustang model!!!
Anyway, take a look and see what I am talking about.
Thanks again for the crits guys.

Wow, great model and texture. Did you paint your own textures? or is it a combination of photographs and paint? Keep up the good work!
danRod
11-04-2002, 08:25 PM
PIGHAT: Yeah I painted all the textures by hand except for the wheels(well the rims at least) and the lights and grill. Everything else I did by hand.
IF ANYBODY KNOWS.........I am just stupid and dont know how to get an avatar linked to my signin name, any one please let me know.:surprised

lowrider schoolbus... i wonder who got that idea in the first place :hmm: that thing is just wack
this vehicle must have air suspension cause otherwise it's PRETTY hard to drive on other surfaces than really flat asphalt :)
