View Full Version : How to get rid of "scorch" marks?

Hello all,

I was experimenting with patch modeling and I ended up with these black scorch marks on my test model. I've tried adjusting the smoothing groups and that didn't help any. Tried converting the patch to a poly and then messing with the smoothing groups some more to no avail. Obviously, I'm going about this the wrong way.

Can someone tell me how these black marks originate and then how to get rid of them?

Thanks for the help.

Make sure that all of the vertices are intersecting...

Nothing's getting scorched... that's just dark areas from the smoothing getting all... weird. I don't know much about patches, though, so I can't really say much about how to fix it. Check the vertexes as that other guy said, and the smoothing groups (I'm assuming patches use those somewhere...?)

Apply a Smooth Modifier - you'll see what your model looks like without any smoothing then.

But the underlying problem relates to 'bad' geometry (usually). So make sure you've got verts welded/edges connected and enough polys to go round!

Well I don't think that smoothing will help at all on this one. I think that your problem lies with the model having some interiour polyes on the inside of the mesh, which is hence causeing the black scortch marks on the render. rip ya model to bits and delete the pesky little buggers, or if ya to lazy for that, try out the stl check modifier, it is usually good for finding them pesky little interiour polys. And if that don't work you can come and kick me in the nuts for wasting your time :P

Thanks for the reply's!

Trambott nailed it on the head. Well, I guess everybody was right sort of. The model has bad geometry leading to screwed up smoothing. As Trambott correctly surmised, there happens to be a bunch of interior polygons in the model that is causing it to have the goofy smoothing.

Thanks for the help everyone! Excellent observation Trambott! You've saved your nuts this time. :wip: :D :surprised

hehe, well i am lucky to have some nutz at the moment, because i ran into a problem today that resulted in the same scortch marks, and the only way i could solve it was by clearing the smoothing groups, so I owe an appology to the other replys, because they were right too, although at the time of my last post i thought they was talking shiiiiiiet
