I'm modeling a polygon cigarette box, and on the inside it has this cut-out. I modeled that shape with a polygon cube, and now I'm trying to cut it out of the bigger square with the boolean function. But anytime I try to do it, both the main square and the cut-out cube just disappear. What am I doing wrong?

Here's the scene:

Please help.

ahh yes, maya booleans....welcome to hell

as far as i know, maya wont work with non solid shapes - for example your cigarette box is 3 single sided polygons. it *might* work if you extrude it a little to give it some volume.

then again it might not. theres quite a few other variables that break booleans

good luck!

easy.. extrude the front top edge (the biggest) over the operator, then select the main box and the operator (the one you use to cut your box) and click on difference.. Delete the extra face you've got. Tell me if you're happy with booleans in maya (!)

Ah, that makes sense.

Thanks guys. :)

I'm happy with booleans in general because they are a very handy feature to have. I just think it requires you to learn everything about it before you start playing with it, because if you don't know what you're doing it can very easily destroy your scene...

I learned on another forum in more detail about the solid shapes pixelherder was talking about.
