Make a cube, edge cut with 2 subdiv. Select one of the new edge, and hit Edge loop. It will selects some edges, but not the right ones.

not being a winged edge or half edge system edgeloop detection is a little more difficult so you will get wonky edge loops, to prevent it though you can try selecting a second edge to make the selection a little more accurate.
