View Full Version : New Video Tut: unfolding a box
AdamT 06-07-2005, 05:49 PM I just whipped up another mini video tutorial (around 15 minutes long). This one shows how to animate a box unfolding. I'll keep it up until all my bandwidth is sucked dry. :)

That's funny. I lit on this same method to create a 'cootie catcher' animation for my very first reel in 2002. It was basically origami, and as you can see I had misalignment issues much worse than yours. As a thought experiment, animating the proper opening and closing of these things was kinda fun.
Bones seemed like the best solution because they kept a constant size for each paper panel, but later I reconsidered and wondered whether it would've been less grueling if I'd used simple bend deformers.

Thanks. :) Govinda, I think it would be a much bigger headache to try and do it with other deformers.

Cool video :)
I used the exact same technique when animating a box some time ago. It was my first time using bones and it took me ages :D

Yeah, your way is better (and the tools are better now) and the result much cleaner.

Hey Adam,
Keep the tutorials coming! Last few were great.
It's always interesting to watch someone else's working process.
I've been using 3d professionally for nearly 3 years and I've never actually
met anyone else who uses Cinema. So in theory, I'm the best 3d guy I know!
And with such compelling commentary, you've got a future in Radio or Film Trailers!

Good, but why is it not exact Adam ?

I did go thru it myself and it fitted perfect when folded together. The two things I can think of that differ are ,
first I welded together the parts that actually are together. The bottom corners and the long flap and I had the bottom of the box at Y zero exactly. That made the bones have the exact same placement as the polygons when I added them and thus the roots of the bones are at the folding edges. It might be that Adams bones or box where slightly off.

Weeell, it's easier when you're not talking and trying your best not to sound like an ass. :)

Also, it occurred to me after I did it that you don't need the central bones at all.

I was just kidding Adam, love those little video tutorials focused on a very specific modus operandi.

Thanks, Adam. Although I knew how to do that, the video was very very funny! yaddayaddayadda, lalal, what the?!? .... :)
The misalignment is caused by the re-centering of the object-axis manually and not with coordinatesmanger after you unfolded the Box in Polygonmode. Setting the object back to zero caused the polygons not to be exactly on y=zero. To be more precise, it caused the polygons to be on y=2, because you moved the axis 103,7 units down and then 1.7 units up againt to correct it visually. Which means you have 2 units to much on the axis-movement :p if I can remember well. I read that on the HUD in the video.

Adam, what is the plugin "Ohair"? I'm not familiar with it.
Thanks for the tut.

A good tut, but why would you not just animate seperate polys?

Adam, you said "whipped up another" video. Where are your others? Somehow, I must have missed them when you posted.

Thanks Tonfarben, I figured it must be something like that. :)
Bobzilla, I only did one other--on modeling an Ionic column--but I had to take it down because it's tooooo big. Killed my bandwidth allotment. Someone mirrored if for me but I doubt it's still up.

Adam: I can't seem to get to the area of your site with either the .swf or the .html. Have you taken it down or is it me? From the replies it appears that everyone else could access them.

I would also like to take a look at that tutorial. I was just going through the other one you did(ionic column) again last night and really liked it. Thanks Adam!

Thanks for the tut Adam. I did a similar cube opening sequence,
but, decided to use the axis of each panel (very low tech) only after
realizing that I haven't experimented with bones since v5, LOL.
V9+ makes all this much easier, as per your tut.
BTW, You sounded good, LOL, no one likes hearing their voice ....
imo, mine is much worse :)
Question: what app did you use for the recording ? Link?
I'd also like to see the column tut as well, if it can be found, as I also
did an architectural project where Ionic fluted columns were used.
They're not as easy to do as some would think :)

Glad you liked it. :) I used Camtasia Studio 2 for recording: http://www.techsmith.com
I need to talk to the C4DPortal guys about hosting the column tut. It's too big for my bandwidth.
Like the tutorial Adam. Thanks for sharing it with us, It's always great to see how other people do stuff. Whether its to see that others do things the same as you or differently, its still great to watch.
cheers for posting it!

Hi Adam,
I love your video tutorials. You can get around the bandwidth problem by uploading the video files to a free host.
Here are 2 links: www.qfile.de and http://rapidshare.de
It's free to upload and download from these sites. There are upload file size limits (about 50 meg i think). The download limit is that you can only download 1 file per hour per computer.
Probably better if you can get a Cinema 4D site to host them, but otherwise these sites seem to work very well.
Cheers
