ORIGINAL IDEA FROM the one and only:

Bobby Chiu's Toronto Subway Sketch Group (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=210734)

The idea started with a great artists called Bobby Chiu's (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=210734)
who started a sketching club in the Toronto subways.
So with his permission I am expanding his idea to the whole plantet.

Check out his original thread to see some amazing art.

very cool idea - Chiu's stuff along with the others in his sketch group have made some awe inspiring pieces.

I would love to form a group but I have a couple of problems...
I have no one that I know of that even looks at this site in my area (dont ask me why!)
I have no subway

Any other ideas or a way to post art. I know not everyone (including myself) checks out every forum on here, but I would love to do this more as a whole than by myself.

Anyone else from Tampa with an idea?

Hey thanks Roberto and CGTalk for doing this.

My sketchgroup in Toronto has been together now for a little over half a year now and I can really start to see improvements in many of the member's drawings. It's a great habit to have and it's been a pleasure teaching a bit about how I draw and think. I really hope this takes off because subway sketching is really a lot of fun and is a great way to meet others in the art industry!

It's one thing to draw on the transit on your half an hour ride to work but it's totally different drawing people for a couple hours in a row. I find it to be much more effective.

I've met many new friends over the months and am looking forward to meeting even more down the road.

Cheers,
Bobby

Anyone out there interested in one for Edmonton, Alberta? We don't have much of a subway but could go back and forth from the UofA to... well, wherever it ends (Capilano?). Feel free to send me an email or post a reply, because who knows when the best time to meet would be? Thanks!

PS: Yup, I'd be willing to be the group leader unless someone else feels they'd really love to!

Lovin the idea and a few of the guys from work thought it was a cool idea too.

MEETING DAY: Saturday, June 18 @12:00-12:15pm (TRIAL only for now...)
CONTACT PERSON: Crystal Schwengler: cschwengler@yahoo.com
MEETING NOTES: I will be wearing a dark green canvas messenger bag and holding a nice fat sketchbook of course!

I hope everyone who is afraid that their skills aren't "up to snuff" isn't discouraged and doesn't show up. Please bring friends, anyone interested, and if the weather is nice and there aren't many people in the LRT, we'll go up to the Parliament Grounds by the pool. Bobby Chiu's Kuala Lumpur Subway Sketch Group JUNE 2005 (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=247691)

MEETING LOCATION: KL Sentral Station, Near McD
MEETING DAY: Sundays, 04:00 PM - 04:30 PM
CONTACT PERSON:: Avi, cdtavijit 'at' yahoo.com.sg, 016 3 572 576
MEETING NOTES: This is just the starting, lets circulate this around and start the meeting from next week, June 19th onwards. I will come with a redish t shirt written "aiyah"

Other information: for the sketch group i am buying a web space of 2 GB next week and i would like to ask you all to suggest a domain name for it. I will also see if i can develop an application by the time we meet so that we can upload the art work from our comp. If can not, then c how.

Although we dont have subway, but we have LRTs, and i think KL sentral would be nice place since you can come here by putra, ktm or mono rail. Sorry for those who are taking STAR, just change in Masjid Jamek ya.

Dont worry if your drawing isnt great, I cant really draw (seriously), but lets just get together so that we can improve.

Hey Crazy3dman!

Not to seem like I'm stalking you :surprised ... but this sounds really great.

I hadn't realized just how much I miss being able to take the train to work... I used to go through a sketchbook every 6-8 weeks, and now it takes me about a year!

There's something that happens with art when you've got absolutely nothing to do!

Hi Everyone!

If you want to start a sketchgroup, but no one seems to be interested, I'd suggest you just start it up anyways.

When I started mine up in January, there were a few times where it was just lonely ol' me sketching by myself! lol... but because I kept at it and kept posting stuff on the internet and asking my friends to come, now there's always people coming every week.

I originally started a sketch group because I wanted to make sure that I went sketching every week consistantly. So I'd have good drawing habits. Soon I found that others wanted to do the same, and now there's lots of people that come with me sketching every week because they see how quickly it improves their art skills and how fun it is to draw all the people on the train. Time really seems to fly!

mttjss - If you have no subway, that's fine. Any form of transportation will do. Or even a park - like Roberto said. We want to see your sketches!!

thebrianproject - Awesome! I look forward to seeing your sketches!

MWarsame - hey that's great!

Ac0rN - That's great! I say you do it up in Stockholm!

KungFu Hampster is in! awesome. I'd love to see some of your sketches

erilaz - sounds like fun! I wish I could join you down there!

birdybear - Alright! can't wait to see all the sketches! tell Joel to go too! his drawings are great!

InterFacer - sounds like a plan!

dbluewolf - wow... this group in Malaysia seems to be really taking off! that's great!

tilite - Very cool! I hope to see some stuff from you!

Gord MacDonald - Nows the opportunity you've been waiting for! Start one up (by yourself if you have to) you'll see it catch on.

crazy3dman - yes yes! That's great to hear Chi-town is down to sketch!

arvid - acer travelmate 300

Reinier - I say you do it! I'd love to see some awesome sketches from you

anim_ziggy - :) you can take it. a little bit of warmth for some kick ass drawing skills... i think it's worth it

aaraaf - That's great David! What better way to spend an afternoon? meeting new people and honing some skills... it's a great way to network!

air tiger - that's the idea! to meet other proffessionals and it's FREE! no membership fees or anything... just the price of the subway ticket.

The Clyke - hahaha... if you can 3d model characters on the subway, i'd love to see them! sounds like an awesome idea

fabian84 - Bay area is down to sketch! that's great! I hope you'll find some others or just go solo for now... love to see some sketches

lasting memories - thx kelly

MWarsame - YEAH! THAT'S THE SPIRIT!! rock on

El-Rodente - Ian, start it and "they" will come ;)

shivmoo - hehehe... well maybe they're just hiding

djkaneda - i'd say go for it Jeff. Just drag a friend or two to go with you and you'll see it catch on after a while. it aways does...

anim_ziggy - patience my friend. do it and they will come... eventually. they always do - because it's fun and it's cheap! hehehe

ryusen - You can definitely start one on your own. I think it's a great idea. Thats how I started

ryusen: I'll be in Singapore on the 20th of July for about a year. If you don't get any interest by then, I'll be likely to join you. I've been doing subway sketching on my own here in Washington DC, and it's a heck of a lot of fun, and a much more productive and entertaining way to pass the time than catching catnaps. :)

For DC, I spoke to Roberto last night, and we're going to try and hit the Metro this Sunday (June 12) to do some sketching. If anyone in the area is interested, I've started up a thread, so please feel free to chime in (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=248310).

06-10-2005, 05:55 AM
ah! seems like we all are geared up for getting into a good habit. yeaah!!!

well, lets put it this way, you can ALWAYS draw alone and then post up in cgtalk. You can bring your friends along and draw too. You dont have to be a cgtalker to draw right?

And whats best, its a SUBWAY group, you draw when you are suppsingly wasting your time. Its not a "office hour" drawing group where you are drawing and not doing work, or a "classroom" drawing when the lecturer is boring, its a group when you draw in the train standing or sitting.

So, just start a group, you dont have to wait for anyone, and put a date, fix a place and post your work. Good things are hard to come by, but they do, eventually.

I cant just wait to be an artist.

cheers

anim_ziggy - Hey that's great! I have a little sketchbook(3x5inch) too that I carry around for emergency. Then I have my normal 9x12 sketchbook for regular sketching. If you have sketches, why don't you start up a London thread and post them there? I'll be glad to give you comments or advice if you'd like.

MWarsame - They'll see it... you guys just need to start a London thread and more and more people will notice as time goes on

Louie - Great! Hope to see some of your sketches!

Helsinki has it's own sketch group now!

We will add more info with Xeltestic about the group when the official "Bobby Chiu's HELSINKI Subway Sketch Group"-thread pops up in the forum. It'll take few moments 'cause I haven't yet posted enough posts.. so be patient please :)

More info and link to the thread will be posted in this thread as soon as possible. At the moment everyone who's interested in the sketch group in Helsinki area can contact me and my pal Xeltestic for additional info.

Cheers,

Im lucky enough to have lived with Bob in college....
he inspired me a lot then, and its great to see his ideas inspiring so many now....

the sketchgroup here in Toronto is one of my favorites times all week....its one of those things thats easy to make yourself too "busy" to go...but I get myself out there most of the time and let me tell you...its always a great experience...once Im sitting there with my pad out and all the interesting people around time flies and all of a sudden Ive filled a couple of pages up....

Theres nothing else Ive experienced that improves my character designing abilities more then this. Flipping through my pages from the first time I went to now, I see sooo much improvement which I use to compel me to keep going!

Way to go Bobby Chiu!
See ya on the train

The edmonton subway sketch group had their meeting last saturday and it was a real success! There was a total of seven people who showed up and we all had a great time, despite the rainy weather. I encourage now more than ever those who are floating around here to start a group. It is well worth the work involved!

I'm starting out at 11am at Grand Central on the East side, Downtown Platform. Im boarding a #6 train riding it to the last stop at Brooklyn Bridge, then Riding it back to 14th street and Union Square. I'll be wearing an "ELGIN" Grafetti hat and will probably hang around the station for a little while so if there are straggelers we can meet up.

Thanks for replying Bobby! Well I went Saturday morning and took the train to San Jose. I ran into a couple problems. 1) Im an early bird. I got up at 8 o'clock on a saturday. There werent many people there to draw. 2)The train that I got on had bus sttle seats so it was nearly impossible to sketch the 2 people on the train. So when I got to the station I stuck around there and did a couple sketches. I had to leave quickley so I dont have much to show. Bobby I was wondering how you approach a sketch that you know is gonna change in about 1 -2 seconds but its a damn good pose and you really want to get it? Do you quickly do a gesture with a few quick strokes? This weekend is the 4th of July so I will be going back home for a weekend vacation. I will post some sketches when I return. Oh and I will prevail in starting the San Jose Sketch group. Muahahahah

theres some amazing work going on here, i am considering starting one of these sketch groups when in September i go to university in Newcastle, UK...
me and my best friend are both going to be studying architecture, but want to hold on to life drawing.. seems a great way to do so.. they have the 'metro' system in newcastle which is kind of the north of england's answer to the london underground

and Bobby, congrats on all of the things youve done/won.. your work is amazing, i love your olympic runners.. reminded me a bit of my favorite artist, kadir nelson

Gord - Very nice!

I have a question for Bobby, or anyone else who's actually had a big group show up. If you have more than just a few people show up, do you all stay on the same subway car, or spread out through the whole train? Just curious. Not that I've had to worry about it yet. But maybe...someday.

Ok... i liked this one because it actually looks like the guy (likeness is probably my most distinct weakness). Hopefully I will be able to post some from some more members down the road (not enough time at this moment to get them)

PS: I've had seven people in my group as the "biggest gathering" and one guy did get out and moved to another car half way through. When you spread out during the session, moving cars then meet up after for a crit of sorts works well. In the food court we constantly move tables into the biggest crowds.

I'm starting up a Detroit sketch group (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=262890). Hello everyone!

Already, it's September. Time for new beginnings.

I just wanted to catch you guys up a little: I've launched my own new venture, Imaginism Studios, and one of our first projects is book of sketches and tutorials on digital painting, which we're selling online (http://www.artofbob.com/books.html) and at shows. I've also included an entire section dedicated to subway sketching, just cuz sketching has always been a major part of the foundation on which I've built the rest of my art. I think it's a good way to go in order to improve.
Anyway, now with my book completed, I expect to have a lot more time to check in with everybody.

I read over this thread starting at the beginning today and I've found myself reconnecting with the passion of my fellow artists. While I'm sure we all know that things won't always go smoothly (whether with subway sketching or work or school or LIFE in general), it's important not to get discouraged. (I felt quite inspired to see Shaun's can-do spirit, putting forth so much additional effort after NJ/PA's one low turnout instead of giving up!)

Personally, despite the long hours lately and all the hard work I've put into getting my studio off the ground, I'd still managed to stick with our weekly subway sketching group just cuz it's relaxing and simple. How much more pure can art get beyond a pencil and a piece of paper, right?

So don't be concerned about the turn out, wherever your group might be. If you sketch alone, you are a dedicated artist; if you are a group of two... well, a "group" starts at two! The point isn't to overrun the subway anyway; the point is to become a better artist! And all good artists have discipline and good art habits.

So I hope everybody will keep sketching, keep drawing, keep working at your craft whether it's at a mall, in your college or work cafeteria, or on the subway. (Personally, I like sketching on the subway cuz of the broad cross-section of society that takes transit. I can see life from so many different angles just by riding the subway.)

Thanks Roberto and everyone else for keeping this thread going! I'm looking forward to seeing everybody's work!

Cheers,
Bobby.

Wow, it is really strange seeing so many discouraged people in here. Edmonton is a small city but we've had lots of sucsess. You have to be a bit agressive (which isn't really my style but you have to do what you have to do I guess), I email my old college profs who tell students, I also email my local childrens illustration group, old clubs I used to be involved in (and no, they weren't "art" clubs either), and looked up all the people on CGtalk that are from Edmonton and PM'd them. I'm going to eventually get a website up as well (first I'm working on my own... heh heh) and will make hand-outs for my members. I'm at the point where a comfortable group comes every time (usually just the four of us) which I find a nice size to blend into crowds with. I've gone to the zoo, malls, the LRT, a pub, park... all good places. I just recently took everyone to a figure drawing session which was a big hit too. We are going a bit out of our realm next week and are going to try sculpture (that should be cool). We don't have a set day of the week, which is hard for some people but also makes it easier for others to stop by everyonce and a while.

Keep trying guys and even if you end up sketching alone just think how much easier it will be to blend into any crowd! No more sour looks... or maybe there will be? ha ha! If you are out there thinking of starting a group, don't shy away. It's well well worth it. Go for it, be prepared for a bit of "grunt work" but also more fun than you'll expect. Go where the fun is.

Here's my last sketches from figure drawing: warning: nudity.

Hey any one out there in Vegas want to start a sketch group??

I read birdybear's post and I gotta say, I'm really glad to have "met" so many people on here who've been so supportive of me, my work, and my ideas.

As for the Subway Sketching Groups, I think anyone who wants to start one must do so for the love of art. If you wanna do one to become influential or popular or whatever, this is not the thing for you. Cuz if you start something that costs nothing and has no obligation for anyone to join, you really must be prepared to go alone a lot of the time cuz people won't feel the urgency to attend right off the bat. The Toronto group wasn't always strong, just as I'm sure birdybear's Edmonton group didn't happen overnight. But as the cliche goes, if you build it, they will come. But don't "build it" for the sole purpose of having people come join you. Art is a field and industry based on passion. If you have passion, people will naturally gravitate towards you. If you publicize your group, one person will join you eventually. If you can infect them with your passion, they'll get sucked in and bring someone else. And another, and another, until like birdybear or our Toronto group, you build a core group of people who are present every week.

If you start your own group (and considering how little is involved in just STARTING a group, anybody anywhere can do it), you're building your discipline to benefit yourself and your work first. Develop good art habits, lead by example, and be the first to leap in.

(I've found that being forced to coordinate strangers every week has also really helped me with my networking and presentation skills, both important skills to have for work, which no one is gonna teach you in school.)

Anyway, I didn't mean to write this much. Basically, I just wanted to say that, there's no Subway Sketch Group that's too small, as long as there's a Group.

Cheers,
Bobby.

Shaun,

I'm sorry to hear that! If it makes you feel better, the DC group has about as much momentum as a rock
Cheers! :)

~Rebeccak

As long as you get out there, you've got momentum !
So - um - keep on "rockin".

Birdybear has some good ideas on recruitment

Hey, everybody. Back from Baltimore. Sorry I didn't get to meet up with you, Rebecca. Didn't have much time at all for anything(The wife and I went to a wedding).

I've always been sketching where ever I've gone and this past trip was no exception. I did a lot of sketching at Burbank Int'l, DFW, BWI and around Baltimore in general. We had really long days during travel days due to layovers and such, so we were traveling for about 10 hours a day...ugh. :argh:

Time to fly Jet Blue the next time.

I also do a lot of sketching at the 3rd St. Promenade, so if a group wants to meet up, email me and let me know and I'll try to make it down there!

Hi everybody,

I made a very long time that i didn't draw. Today I decided to kick myself in the (xxx) and sketch something. I had 10 min before go to work so I made the maximum sketches I can made in this time. Here the result.

Bobby Chiu's Munich Subway Sketch Group 2008 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=31&t=598851)

MEETING LOCATION: Soon to be decided
MEETING DAY: Saturday March 1st 2008, 13:00
CONTACT PERSON: Philipp - herr.ober@gmail.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/herr.ober@gmail.com)

MEETING NOTES: This will probably start on March 1st. Probably somewhere at central Station/Hauptbahnhof
If you plan on coming you can write me a short note, if you want to be sure I'm/we're there. I suggest we'll draw at the meeting spot for about half an hour until everyone is there and then move on.

Other information: We'll draw on the U-Bahn as well as at the stations, when the weather is nice we'll also sketch in Parks, Cafés and maybe the Zoo once in while. The possibilities are endless.

Dont worry if your drawing isn't great, but lets just get together and learn from each other.
All you need to bring is a sketchbook and whatever tools you like to draw with and some change for the public transport or a coffee.
You're always welcome to suggest timing and location too.
