Title: Explorer
Name: Craig Dowsett
Country: United States
Software: Maya
The Concept for this work is for an education Sci Fi program. Our Hero travels around the Universe, exploring environments and teaching a variety of science principles based on his surroundings. With the suit he can explore almost anywhere- deep into Neptune or The surface of the Sun- and offer hard science based on his not so realistic travels. Made in Maya, Composited in After Effects, textures painted with Photoshop. I got some great help from folks in the WIP section- thanks to everyone.

Hi- it all looks rather cool! but my first impression was not as good- the image is a bit monochrome and without contrast- The background, allthough it is blured is creeping into the foreground making the image a bit confusing. The is mostly visable on the armour of the characters suit- This is even more emphasised with the volumetric lightening which imho is a dangerous tool:)
again, the modeling and the idea are totaly kickass:)
dont know if that makes sence to u, but anyways..

Models and textures are really good. Maybe more dynamic background could work better. Also the figure has hot spots at our right but the powerful light source comes from our left.

wow, I really like your textures!
The composition has a distinct feel to it, and that is always good
Great modeling as well.

pretty awesome image and armor - your metal texture is very nice! I like the composition as well.
Three critiques -
The right knee (his left) looks a little skinny where its coming out of the boot- I may not have a good enough angle on it, but it appears very narrow for a knee.
The logo on said leg looks like it was put on the image after it was rendered.. may be an effect of the light, but it looks to me like its just floating there.
The disk that your hero is standing on juts out from the image and isn't blended in very well with the much faded out background.
otherwise, very nice : )

Thanks for the critiques folks. First off- I've included a close up of the face. Second a wire.
veljko-lemonade : Glad you like the models- and I appreciate your critique into the color/background. My hope was that the character would stand out as the focus (it having the most contrast and color). I wanted a simple color design, but I don't want folks to be bored. I appreciate your insight into this..
oDaYWaLKeRo: Yeah- I see what you mean about the light. I think the hottest points are on the character right- but some of my fills probably be toned down. Thanks for catching that.
NeoJin131: Thanks- glad you liked it
kwills256 : I see what you mean about the knee. I think it is in part due to the angle- but that excuse isn't going to fix it. I'll take a look and see what I can do. As for the logo- can you believe I've toned it down already? It was even brighter before- I'll have to edit it again. I did want the disk and character to be the least blurred items- but I agree it could be more subtle.
Thanks again everyone. I have to admit- I love modeling- so I appreciate the kind words there. I also want to improve- so I'm glad folks have helped me to see errors I've missed.

I think you have captured the feel and look you have been wanting to obtain from this piece. I like the suit...it really gives it that "techy" look. The last thing that I will suggest...Move his right shoulder up slightly in Y and back slightly in -Z . Something just doesn't seem right when I look at where the ribcage and where the end of the suit are supposed to meet, like the left part of the suit should be lower. Besides that I think this piece Rocckks! It would be interesting to see what kinds of life are on this planet...anyone seen Scully around?

Overall I really dig this piece. I know that you put quite a bit of time into it and I think it turned out well. I do think that the logo is a bit blown out, but its such a small thing that could either be fixed, or just left alone. The pose is kinda wierd to me, just cause it looks kinda reactionary. Either way, looks great to me.
