Nice thread. Thanks.
This is a useful list for beginners, and even a bit useful for experienced users such as myself. ;) There are a few in there i didn't know about... like #2.
It should be noted that #33 and #37 are duplicates. :)

ooh, ooh, I want to add some to the list that someone or everybody may already know or not know:
46. (not 45 because mlkdesign already added one) Holding Shift + Alt while transforming a object will do it proportunatly and from the center.
47. If you have the move tool selected and you want something duplicated just hold the alt key and move the image, holding the shift + alt while doing this will move it along one axis.
48. If you want to make a image straight that is crooked (maybe from scanning). Click on the eyedropper tool or it the I key 3 times to get the ruler. Click on the left side of the straight edge, then the right side of the straight (but crooked) edge. The choose Image> Rotate Canvas> Arbitrary. PS will give you the degress of rotation you just click ok.
49. If you create something in Illustrator copy it, and paste it in PS it will ask you if you want this to be a pixel, path, or shape layer.
50. If you have a mask on a layer and you want to place a image in there and keep the mask, simply open the image say copy, and then ctrl click on the layer to select the mask and it Shift + Ctrl + V to paste it into the mask which will also put it on a new layer as well.
51. to center a image, ctrl + a , ctrl + x, ctrl + v, I think it also puts that image on a new layer.
52. Ctrl+E will merge the highlighted layer down to the next
53. When you have a brush selected, using [ or ] will scroll up or down that brush list.
54. double clicking the zoom tool will make the image 100%, double clicking the hand tool will fit the image to your screen resolution.
55. Type stuff:
ctrl + h will hide the the highlight on your selected type.
if you click once while your type is select on the font list, your can use your arrows to scroll up and down and see the fonts change on the fly!
alt + left or right arrows will change your tracking in encrements of 10
ctrl + alt + left or right arrows will change your tracking in encrements of 100
ctrl + alt + up or down arrows will change your leading in encrements of 10 pts
shift + ctrl with < or > will change your font size in encrements of 2 pts
I like this lets keep it going! tofumaster if I repeated anyhing let me know! I didn't read the whole list!

hey tofumaster, I think that what you have started is a great thing that should keep building.
I think 47 is only for cs users, for the second when you hold the shift key down as well as the alt it will constrain it in the direction you move it to. so that the 2 layers line up perfectly.

Great tips! Learned a few new tricks from here, thanks tofumaster!
I'll add a few more to the list, if they weren't already well known :)
61. Ctrl+[plus key] will let you zoom in on an image anytime while Ctrl+[minus key] zooms out. Ctrl+Alt+[plus key] will zoom in AND RESIZE the window to fit the image size... same for Ctrl+Alt+[minus key] as well.
62. When using the Polygonal Lasso Tool, Backspace will undo a lasso step each time you press.
63. Pressing X will switch the selected foreground and background colors.
64. Pressing D will reset the foreground and backgrounds colors to black and white.
65. If your image have multiple layers, create a Marquee selection and pressing Ctrl+Shift+C on any visible layer (it won't work if you selected a hidden layer) will copy the image into memory as if they were flattened! Paste it on a new document to see the result.

TIP : Always wanted to delete a layer without dragging it to the bin ?
In CS (other versions don't have custom shortcuts I believe) you can assign a shortcut for layer deletion. I use CTRL-F5. If you also use the *ALT* key while pressing your shortcut, which disables the dialogue box.
I've been looking for the brush zooming thingy for ages :) thanx!!

I think it's called group with previous layer, and you can alternatively do it by click Ctrl-G (or Ctrl-Shift-G will ungroup)
Tip 66 (or so) ctrl-click a layer thumbnail to select the layer transparency
Tip 67 to see what your layer mask looks like (and edit it), alt-click its thumbnail in the layers palette

53. When you have a brush selected, using [ or ] will scroll up or down that brush list. Not quite, though I too believed it for a long time. Instead, it actually seems to resize the current brush from the current "master" pattern, rather than moving up and down the brush palette. Try it with a custom brush, rather than a circular splat -- it will be very clear what happens.

Hello peeps. Thought this would be the best place for my question, any help would be most appreciated :)
Is there a way that I can move up and down layers with one hand? I'm finding it frustrating having to keep on moving my drawing hand to the keyboard to reach the "alt" key while my keyboard hand presses [ or ] I've got a standard keyboard which has an "Alt Gr" on the right hand side of the space bar which acts like a "crt" key when used with [ / ]
Thanks again :)
Anyone know how to change default color of workspace, something like in point 5 but to the workspace not space around image. I seen something like this in Gnomon DVD with Aaron Sims Vol. 1. He has black color of workspace. I'm not quite shure but I think that Dusso has the same.

k im assuming there isnt one for 7.0 thats what im using, cs(2) = resource hog (and it wont run on my pc...
i don't know exactly if this what you want or something else but you can change your background by click SHIFT + Fill too and click in the workspace area to change to the color you want.
i think if you read carefully from the first one you'll find it around.
hope it helps :D
I know about this. This is in point 5 this thread tips. That option fills space around image in window, but i want fill gray bacground outside window (I don't know is it possible)

the gnomon dvd guy probably used the fullscreen mode (tap 'F' several times - at least twice), the bg is black.
Else the workspace color is your windows GUI color...

They are two separate things, the one you mention was Point 5 of the first post of the thread, (the window color), whereas I'm talking about the standatd window workspace backgrouund color, usually gray (I know I like to turn mine a tad brownish, it feels more 'warm')... Mac users fo instance don't have the same minimize, maximize, close buttons... As a matter of fact, I don't think they have a background in Photoshop, as when you work in window mode you can see your desktop. Yuk.

It is possible, but not in Photoshop it self ... (Greetings to all adobe software developers out there!!!).
My desktop, workspace and document backgrounds are set to black.
Photoshop uses the colorsettings of Windows, since I know Photoshop .. o_O *wicked-sick*
So you just have to change the application background color similar as if you would change your desktop color. I dunno, why they didn't put that into some settings tab of Photoshop it self.
Generally I'm not fan of general settings of the operation system that interfere with my programs. I want to have a custom set of colors, which I can set independly in each software. Cinema 4D, for example, has the most convinient and most flexible GUI settings so far I know. Photoshop needs some more GUI improvements, though ...
just my 2 cents

actually ctrl+shft+n works just fine, no alt necessary
Only if you want to get another dialog box... pressing alt will give you new layer straight away.
Back to brush, [ and ] will increase/decrease your brush size, shift + [ or ] will soften or harden your brush edge
Still in [ and ], Ctrl + [ or ] with move your currently selected layer up and down the hirarchy and Shift + [ or ] with select upper layer or lower layer
Stamp Tool (s) is used to copy an area of image (defined by alt+clicking and area) and paint it somewhere else (cloning). It also works when you have multiple images open at the same time. Alt click an area of any opened file image and paint it anywhere else.
After you created a text you can click on font type tab and tap "down" key over and over to scroll through the font list and see the changes in (relatively) real time. A Feature that I am tired of waiting to happen in illustrator.
Still in text, a trick from microsoft word also apply: hilight the text you ARE typing and hit ctrl+shift+ < or > to resize you text to your need interactively. Pressing Ctrl key while you ARE typing also gives you a free transform box temporarily and will go if you release it. Resizing text also works by pressing ctrl+T (on selected layer, not when you are typing). It still retain as an editable text layer after.
And remember, pressing enter when you type will take you to a new line just like typing a letter but pressing ctrl+Enter OR Enter on numeric key will finish what you type.
You can drag a layer on to any other opened images in photoshop and it will copy it as a layer (better than copy and paste imho). Holding down shift while moving it will snap the image right on the center of the other opened image
If you are working with sets....
Click on the set, in the blending mode it shows pass through by default... if you have an adjustment layer within a set and you want that adjustment layer to effect those layers underneath it WITHIN the set only, set the blending mode of the set to "normal" instead.
Mentioned before with more explanation:
- Pressed F to switch to 3 different viewing mode... when I first try it I said "wtf? what it's for?" Well, if you are sick of painting your image on the corners just to find yourself resizing your current image window, with F you can pan way outside your image. Happy corner painting!!
- Create a new file, 500x500 px, create a new layer, get a standard brush and paint a dot on the top center of your image (like the number 12 position on a clock). press ctrl+alt+T, it will duplicate your original layer and free transform the new one, move the pivot point (the circle with little dot in it found when you are free transforming something) to the center of your image, rotate your image 30 degrees to the right and hit OK to confirm the transform
now.........
be exicted..........
Hit Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T 10 times and see what happen!! I have just found it last week. I used to think this can only be done in illustrator.
I hope that helps...............
Thank you I-NetGraFX.
Tahnk you all.

Not quite, though I too believed it for a long time. Instead, it actually seems to resize the current brush from the current "master" pattern, rather than moving up and down the brush palette. Try it with a custom brush, rather than a circular splat -- it will be very clear what happens.
Scrolling up or down through your brush pallet used to happen with command + [ ] until the new brush engine came on the scene in PS7.

I made these minimal modifications that I find very useful:
Assigned ctrl+z to step backwards in the history palette.I find undo a silly option having this one available!PLUS,u won't b needin the history pallette that much, anymore,so it's a pallette less to bulk up your workspace.
Assigned F3 for print size(view>print size).Helps me keep notion of how much detail I should put,or not, when coloring a comic page. All that zooming in n out can make u overdetail a page without any worthy outcome,if not a bad one(specially concerning deadlines).

Just a small advice.B4 creating a new shotcut key, check the options given by the right button. After all,it's a lot more simple clicking a moving the cursor a little up or down than try to remember all these crazy combos n having your fingers do funky gymnastics.

ok...here is somehting that has been bugging me until i understood it today...
Everyone knows the number keys change the opacity of your brush...and that shift+## key will change the flow of your brush.
Well, for whatever reason...and i finally found out why....if you have the AIRBRUSH toggled ON...these hotkeys are reversed....and now the ## keys change flow and shift+## will change opacity...
in the beginning of this thread it showed that you can change the blend mode of brushes/layers....it was not listed that you need to hold shift+alt and in combo with the hotkey
now is there a hotkey for changing tool presets, similar to the , and . for brush tip?

Asked a couple of PS pros that I know (or are at least better at PS then I am currently), is there a way to select multiple layers versus selecting one at a time to put into a set (or folder)? Just curious... as it sounded like I should have made the set first before creating multiple layers.

Asked a couple of PS pros that I know (or are at least better at PS then I am currently), is there a way to select multiple layers versus selecting one at a time to put into a set (or folder)? Just curious... as it sounded like I should have made the set first before creating multiple layers.
New in CS2:
select a layer,
Shift select more layers (not link, you can select muliple layers at once in CS2)
Ctrl G

Thx! Don't have CS2 yet, so I guess I'll be doing it the old fashion way. Thx again.

Not quite, though I too believed it for a long time. Instead, it actually seems to resize the current brush from the current "master" pattern.
yeah , your right, when I wrote it that is what I meant to say. What I should have wrote is if you have a soft brush of a size 20 when you press [ or ] it goes up or down in size 30, 40, 50 and so on.
Thanks

very nice tips.
especially #5 is very useful for me.
I filled my background white,
and by pressing 3 x "F" to fullscreen mode, i have a black one.
very good to check pieces with those two different backgrounds.

Wow. I've been using photoshop for years and didn't know like half of those. Good list! I also found that in CS pressing ctrl+0 (that's a zero) will automatically fit an image on the screen if you are zoomed in or out.

perhaps allready in here, but i'll verify that later:
> holding shift while in zoom mode enables you to zoom in by scrolling up and zoom out by scrolling down
> ctrl-click "create a new layer" to create one underneath the previous one instead of on top
PS will give you the degress of rotation you just click ok.
this is more easily done with the crop tool, draw a crop selection, rotate it so it's the same angle as the "badly scanned image", double click it.

I'm not sure if this was posted earlier, but I hope this is helpful, even though it may be a bit basic::
I'm sure a lot of PS users are familar with the default tool palette and its short cuts (you can view these keyboard shortcuts by placing your mouse/cursor over the tool, a pop-up note will appear, type/press these letters and you can select the tool specified)
However, some tools have different tool varieties, but the same keyboard shortcut. (ex:: B is for the Brush Tool, but also for the Pencil Tool, and ColorReplacement Tool (CS)
You can scroll through the different types 2 different ways::
(1) Click and Hold down LeftMouseButton on tool and you can scroll to the tool you want.
(2) Shift + Keyboard ShortCut can also scroll through the different tools
ex:: Shift + B (once = Brush) Shift + B (twice = Pencil) Shift + B (thrice = ColorReplacement)
NOTE:: Keyboard shortcuts are NOT case sensitive

Ok, Some I remember right now:
When a portion of text is selected, try [ctr + shift + +] to make ps! N [ alt + ctr + shift + + ] to make ss! ;)
alt + ctr + ( click on little triangle up right of layer palette/ palette options ) => opens merlin window! That locks your Photoshop UI! So no one can doodle it! Till you hit “Begone”!!! :D
alt + [ or ], move between layers :)
ctr + ), fit on screen
ctr + alt + ), actual size
Although there is more but just fingers knew em cause I can’t remember now when I don’t need em!!!
PS: Ftaswin , ctr/shift/alt/t really rocks man! :D I didn’t knew this one really!
Have good shortcutting! Mim, ;)

Ftaswin awesome trick, that "duplicate transrform again" thing!!
I'm sharing some tricks about text:
having a chunk o text selected, press Alt + Right Arrow to increase Tracking by 20 and Alt+Ctrl+Right Arrow to increase tracking by 100. Of course, Left Arrow decreases tracking.
with text selected, press Alt + Up Arrow to increase the line Leading and Alt+Shift+Up Arrow to increase Baseline shift ( for example, a single char). Again, Down Arrow decreases values.
One thing that I didn't came across until recently is that having the marquee tool active, the RMB menu changes giving you access for example to the Color Range option. The eyedropper is another one interesting: if I want to select a color of an image to make an html page background color the same, instead of eyedropping one color, open the color picker and copy the hexa for the color, I can right click on top of the color, RMB and select Copy Color as HTML.
"crtl+alt+shif+K" brings up the Keyboard Shortcuts. You can browse and edit the keys. Even assign a shortcut to Brightness/Contrast as someone mentioned. Better still, press "summarize" and export three .html files that gives you a overview on all shortcuts in Photoshop. Maybe not all are there, but you will learn a lot by going through it.

sorry if i am repeating that
----------------------------
on a white background canvas
draw with brush - white colour and difference blend mode selected
then on the screen you will find white colour instead of black because of difference blend mode
now you can again paint with white colour selected or any other colour
......
have fun with photoshop :scream:

Sorry if it was already mentioned bit this one is really good - it adds functionality rather than just doing something quicker.
with Levels (ctrl l), press alt as you adjust white and black points. It will give you a new display mode of your image showing clipping and has colour feedback to show what channels remain unclipped. If you know your primary and secondary color theory you will see what I mean.

Generally when you apply transformation to an object you apply the transformation to the object itself. A cool tip if you want apply transformation on a duplicate of you object is Command-Option-T (PC: Control-Alt-T, then use transform like you usually would. Notice that the original object remains untoched and a copy is transformed instead!
Hope you guys liked!

If you are trying to set the type to set type that looks typographically correct in Photoshop there is an old trick you will have to break; putting two spaces at the end of every sentence. To fix this problem follow these steps:
- Go under the Edit menu and choose Find and Replace Text.
- In the Find field press spacebar twice, then in Change To, press the space bar just once.
- - Click Change All, and every time that Photoshop finds two spaces at the end of the sentence, it will replace it with just one, making you typographically correct.

I think that tips like number 1 should also include how to undo that action, otherwise someone like me might have to spend hours trying to get back to normal.
Otherwise an interesting list, which I will now study more closely.

Did anyone see this pic before in PS.
to see it press Ctrl + Alt and from Help menu choose About Photoshop. :D
i'm waiting for anything new from our members :)
I didn't get a monkey, I got this:-
By the way I suppose everybody already knows that if you have the move tool selected clicking on the left, right, up and down arrows will move that layer one pixel in the arrow's direction?

Er.... what's supposed to happen?
I diligently created a 500x500 new image - faithfully painted my dot at 12 o'clock, managed the transform somehow - took ages to findout where the degrees were so I could get exactly 30 degrees, expectantly did the "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+T 10 times" bit, and peered intensely at my Photoshop screen.... but nothing happened, nothing I could see anyway.
Is there a step missing?

Click and hold and drag the eyedropper and you can eyedropper ANYWHERE on your screen - outside of your document - even outside of Photoshop itself.

If you have worked on Illustrator you already know how to create a multiple shapes from a single shape and make multiple copies by using the Short Cut Key Ctrl + D on PC.
Well the same is also possible in Photoshop...

Really useful thread..
Here's a couple of tips I don't think I've seen posted..
- Hold ctrl and alt and right-click an area in your image to automatically select it's layer.
The REALLY cool part.. Hold shift at the same time and you can now select multiple layers by right-clicking areas on each of those layers in turn - extremely useful when there are hundreds of layers you need to select.. say trees in a forest..
- ctrl shift [ sends the current layer to the bottom - useful when you want to keep something but hide it under your other layers for the time being..
- ctrl shift ] sends the current layer to the top..
- ctrl \ selects a layer's mask
- ctrl shift # selects the layer again.

F3 for "Copy" , F4 for "Paste" and Cmd+J for "Cut and Paste" of course you need to use the marquee toll to execute the cut and paste...
