(Original post):
I know I don't have much yet, but the idea is a desert buggy made from parts scavanged off of tanks destroyed during the war.

This is one of the wheels. Since there weren't enough tread links left on the destroyed tank to make full treads for the buggy, the tread has been linked around each tire individually to provide traction.

I'm normally a low-poly modeler, so I'm having to learn the tricks of modeling for smoothing. Hopefully I'll get the whole thing finished in time! :p

The buggy needs 4 drive wheels, and each tank only has two. So the front wheels were scavanged from the same model tank, but manufactured a different year, and aren't quite the same.

This is the gas tank, several army gas cans strapped together. (The strap isn't there yet, though)

great and detailed "accessories", if the final car get as good as these separate parts, well you know :)

After looking at some more (and better) reference material, I realized that I had made the treads all wrong, so here is the new and more accurate track. The drive wheel has been improved, too, so it smooths better.

Fellah - Heh, you're very right; time to quite screwing around and get down to business or I may never finish! :)

OK. Here's a WIP screengrab of the whole buggy. Not smoothed or textured. I'm going for a very cludged look, offset by the precision machined parts from the tanks.

At last you show the shape!
This looks very promising, great wheels.
I hope you have enough time to finished it... You can do it

Just a small update. The model is all smoothed, but it's still very WIP. I still need to model the engine, cockpit amenities, hang scavanged metal sheeting around the exterior, plus all the bedrolls, shovels, tow cables, wiring, etc.

Let me know what you think.

what's the middle wheel goin' to do? Are you going to build a tire around it? It seems to me it isn't touching the ground. No? :D

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Staffan - The first version of the tread didn't look good when I widened the wheels (it's from WWII when the treads were pretty narrow), so I used a more modern style that matches the modern design for the drive wheel. Sorry. :(

Bytehawk - This buggy is actually supposed to be fully tracked, like a tank, but the guy who built it couldn't find enough compatable links to build full length tracks on both sides. So, the middle wheel is there in case one day he gets enough links. And you're right; it doesn't touch the ground. It scrapes alot going over bumps and stuff, though.

BEAUTIFUL!!!...
great work..
some advice though.. add a wave .. or distortion of somekind to the net.. right now it looks like its made of metal wire..
appart from that looks good. keep up the good work!!!

Oozeballz - Thanks! Heh, the mesh is supposed to be metal. Glad it looks like it. :) I wanted it to be chainlink, but the modeling of that would have been tedious, so I opted for a welded mesh. I still haven't put in the wires holding it to the frame.

I'm currently working on the engine and the leather tarp that forms the roof. Hopefully I'll update early tomorrow morning.

Very, very... very good model!

You rock!!!!!!!! ;)
I'm astonished for your model rich of detail.... BRAVO!
Impressive and .... realistic!!!!!

Only one thing... the lateral wheel.... for which pourpose?
;)

Hi

Well, Real Life(tm) got in the way recently, so I haven't been able to do as much as I wanted to.

Building the engine, widened the wheel base (laterally), and added the bedroll, water jug & dipper, air intake & exhaust tubes, and the fenders. Oh, and the leather sun shade.

Only the first picture has been smoothed; the others are rough. I think the fenders are too wide and the wheels have been moved out too far. Any suggestions?

Piz - Thanks! About the wheel, check out my response to Bytehawk. :)

uuuuaaau!! very very detailled!!

I love the wheels!!

Complete the scene with a lot of dust, dirty textures and a simple environment! :D :D

B R A V O!!!! :D

..... where did you bought it? From ACME... I know... eh eh eh!!!
Very Good!
If you have time you should add some texture/environment...

Ciao!

Very nice work. I like the details. Can I drive it!!!

Maybe I'll get to see some textures for it?

Thanks for the kind words! :)

I still have some more modeling to do, mostly the engine, but I am playing around with some simple textures. I want to keep the scene pretty monochromatic, but I'd still like to have some areas of color. Any suggestions?

I'll probably put up some renders tonight. Well, early tomorrow morning, actually. :D Late night rules!

Confusing Fallout 2 with Grand Theft Auto 2 (2 of my favorite games!), our hero has driven his tank-buggy through a spray booth!! At least he got a sweet paint job! :D

Close up to show off the shader. I just tweaked one from highend3d, but it is a very cool looking shader!

Yesss! :D

Each days your model become more real!

... So, I think that the color scheme is a bit unusual....
I know... you will add dirty and other surfaces imperfection but...
I think red is a warm color .... I think red is happy....

We work on a desolated/waste area, puplated by monster/mutants and poor people....

I thought ... not a pick-up color... I think you should use cold colors...

No? ;)

Excuse me for the critic but for me was a bit strange....
But... don't worry... Is a personal opinion.... :D

Hi

Piz - heh, I was just joking about the paint. :D I thought it would be funny to show this beatup junk car, built from scavanged parts, all painted nice like a sports car. I guess it wasn't that funny, eh? :)

In reality I'm going to try really hard not to blatantly rip-off Azazel's render. I really like how it looks, colors, atmosphere, the whole thing.

I agree about the cold colors; I'm thinking cold grays with greens and a few warm spots.

Tonight's my last real night to work on this...wish me luck! :)

Very cool shader!
I think it's not neccesary dirt the vehicle. it depends of the environment.
Why don't you add an environment and later we see how is the ambience and the function of the vehicle?

Good Luck! :D

OK, well I'm not so good at texturing, or rendering, for that matter, but here is the first final render. Will do more detailed shots, as time permits
