Title: Forest Goblin
Name: Caroline Delen
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Deep Paint, Photoshop, ZBrush

Inspired by Brian Froud's goblins. This creature was modelled in my spare time over the last couple of months. Shaded version of the mesh can be viewed on my site. Although I consider him finished for now, crits welcome :)

Great work. I think the texture on the face is excellent!

I think a good background setting will sell the character even more.

Any chance for a wire?

Wow!! The best goblin design I ve seen in a long time! The face is really incredible, do you plan to make an animation? REally great use og zbrush!

One question, Deep Paint is for what?

Mmm.. i've seen alot of goblin and ghoul like creatures posted on this and other forums but non of them can i easily say matches the quality and design of this one. Your's truly rock the goblin world of 3d! amazing work :)
And you should definately make more fantasy, fable and mythical creatures with your great style of modeling and texturing :)
This is definately front page material and i hope it will end up there too! :D

Please keep up the good work and i cannot wait for your upcoming renderings in the future!

I find his weapon is abit to well crafted for a rather low tech looking goblin. Maybe he could have a more rough looking knife, something that looks like it was hand crafted and not so perfectly machined. The rest of him is very "in-character". Very nice work. 5 Stars.

Thanks again for everyone's comments :)

oDaYWaLKeRo: No plans to animate him yet, although he is all rigged and ready to go.

eddfrutos: I use Zbrush GUV Tiles for UV's. Makes Texturing a bit tricky, but Deep Paint 3D helps.

I like the charecter design. I have a vikingesque charecter that has a fur mantle on his sholders and I'm lost as to how to get the mesh to display as fur. I think I needa plug-in but I'm not sure.

Realy nice textures too, by the way. Awesome renders. Any animation planned for this?

I'm from Spain. First of all sorry about my english language.

You are one of my favorite artist I've followed your work since I saw your archer girl in red, I'm in love with all your work, you and Pascal Blanche make me decide to do 3d and achive some kind of ilustrations and characters so cool and fantastic like yours with my own style.

Your goblin rocks! I said you are an special person for me but I've to say it again, thanks for your time reading.

The style, the design, the colours and the expression are all wonderful. Gorgeous stuff.

Since he's all rigged, you should do a few more poses to show him off. He looks great now, but the pose isn't really menacing, and looks a bit odd since the knife is held up at the ready.

FANTASTIC work!!! Would be really creepy (creepier) if instead of a knife he held a stick with a partially decomposed head on the end of it with a bit of hair. Maybe just a small animal head as opposed to another goblin's head...anyway, awesome job you've done with the design and detailing. A bright future, you have Caroline!

Nice to see you posting some work again. I remember the excellent lowpoly characters you posted a while ago. Great to see how you've crossed over to hipoly yet retained your style. Love that face. The character feels like he'll fall over backwards but nothing a good pose won't fix.

[edit] I just saw your posed model and just wanted to add to my last sentence. It feels like the gob's center balance is behind the feet. Maybe it's the camera angle but the body looks too tilted back. I think it would help if he leaned a bit forward.

Just a quick Q about using ZBrush & Brazil: since Brazil doesn't support proper 3d displacements, are you using the detail maps generated in ZBrush as bump or normal maps, or just exporting a very hi-res mesh?

-Nice clean mesh topology.
-Nice right hand gesture/form. Not so for the left hand. It looks too inorganic. Try emphazising the grip he has on that sword. Fingers change a lot depending on their grasp on objects.
-Overall muscle definition is nice ( biceps is too bulgy though,) you have to work on the back. Can read any muscles working underneath his saggy back.
-I like colors on his skin (blue vein on arm is a nice touch, but it dissapears too sudenly. Tray adding more too, smaller less evident ones)
-Skin shader looks cg like. Maybe too plasticy. The face skin looks better, more variation.
-His skin should be more rough, dirty and opaque, on the body at least. After all he is a forest creature.

nice overall though... just add the details and you are there. I would comp him over a background too. Dont kill yourself building a cool creature and put him against a grey background.

good luck

Lovely work.

I've been wondering what ever happened to you :)

ether
06-07-2005, 06:55 PM
Wow, thanks for all the great feedback!

Mr. Positive: Deep Paint 3D has a really cool feature called "Projection Paint". See my reply to collings below ;)

collings: Cheers! I haven’t really looked into using Zbrush for texturing work yet. Deep Paint 3D is great for texturing because of a feature called "projection paint". It basically flattens a view from which you want to paint from. Its perfect for photo real work, where you might want to project a photo onto a model. Its also great for painting over seams. Although I didn’t use any photo ref for these textures, its still a useful feature for painting. And you can also switch between Photoshop and DeepPaint for projection painting :)

Renaud Galand: Hi Renaud :) There should be zbrush shots of the base mesh in my initial post - it’s basically the original wireframe. There were no shape adjustments made to the original model, most of the zbrushing was pulling out muscular form, and painting in wrinkles and crevices into the skin.

Dravenfr: Sure, you can use the ortho for personal use. Try and change it to look different by playing with the proportions. Also nothing beats drawing your own orthos, give it a go ;)

Wiro: Thanks for the suggestion. I think it may be the camera angle, but my observation is because of his little hat (which it quite light leather), it gives the illusion that his centre balance should be way back. If I were to remove the hat, his balance looks correct. My theory is to draw a line from the centre neck down, which gives a guide to where the feet should stick, in any case, I will review this just to make sure. Thanks again for catching that :)

`mb: I've exported the hi-res mesh, but also used the displace modifier. Waiting on Brazil V2 for the displacements:)

Adriano-Zanetti
06-07-2005, 06:56 PM
Not a big fan of goblins, Trolls and all that... we seen them so often, and all those typa characters... standard have been set so high by LOR, difficult to be fair when rating those typa characters afterward. But when it's done the way you did, it seriously deserves to step back and show some respect.
So, congrats with the awesome character you created there, neat concept sketches, perfect modeling, great touch for the textures! ...4 stars is a minimum!

Yo Caroline,

most impressive.

A great character to demonstrate modelling skills.

I immediately feel intimidated by this critter of a goblin, and would hate to come face to face with him! Yaaaaaa

Most inspirational work! Thanks,

Sincerely,

Philip Koch

This is a ver nice charater! I love it! the texturing looks very real. The only thing I can see that could be improved is the way the rope around his waist frays at the end. All of the ends are the same length, and they almost look more like hair than a rope. Other than that, very nice work indeed!

Seems to me the perfect terror movie creature, that jumps on you and you can't take it over even though it only weights 20 pounds. Nice concept art and the realization it's just the same, good render and lighting. I would like to see it in his natural enviroment

absolutely mindblowing work! Youve truly inspired me with this model... I'm finally gonna teach myself ZBRush, no matter the hair loss and lack of sleep.

Your texturing is also awesome, very soft and realistic transitions between colours and bumps. 5 stars.

Stunning character, love his cute, ugly little face, esp love the red nose.
I'd love to see him pull a face, with that big mouth open!!
Hope you get the time to do more characters for our view pleasure.

Great work, Caroline! And all the more amazing in that he bears an almost astonishing resemblance to a former co-worker of mine ( ... though that indivdual might be classed as more of an old troll than a goblin... Ha Ha! Just kidding Ged! ...heh ).

Potential greatness here! Five-stars... each one a supernova!
