Nice start - but as Ls3D said, you should tune the light !
Here is a very good tutorial on creating these objects... so if you donīt know it already you must have a look !!!

Headlight - Tutorial (http://www.3dcar.kg/tutorial/less02.htm)

There are also some great cars to view or for reference ;)

Thanks for your advice......it is still WIP:). The tutorial on the headlights is great. Look out for the next post, it'll be along shortly :D
Thanks again,
Kel

In order to make the car cool cooler.
1)make a huge box above the car
2) Give it a white material with self-ill to 100
3) put more lights at the bottom of the scene(at the wheels)
4) add a raytarace material to the rims and with a falloff material set to a a light blue in the luminance channel.

Good luck!

OK.......I took what you all said (thanks by the way), and I came up with this.......
Please let me what you all think now...:D

Looks really great ! Maybe a lil more tweaking, but i canīt say exactly where - i couldnīt make it better !

WOW - - what a difference lighting makes! I thought you had a good model in the first pics.... but then you made the suggested lighting changes and it really added to your creation. Like BASSit said - I couldn't make it better .... either. VERY Good job on your first model.

I'm now working on details :D

Can anyone give me any pointers to making the lights light up? I tried making a self illuminated texture with increased output, but I was wondering if anyone knew any other (nicer) ways of doing it?

Cheers for all the post so far....

Really impressive . . . iīve only one suggestion: the asphalt looks like it has just a stretched bump on it ;) It wouldnīt be so bad if this stretching would continue on the wall of the tunnel. Or just set to keyframes for the street & tunnel so that itīs moving and add some motion-blur to the render-setting for these objects - so you can cheat the motion-blur.

I donīt know wich package youīve running but in MAX i use the glow-effect from the video-post ! For headlights i would suggest a gradient glow !
But i think it takes a lot of test-renders to get it real :( You can also add some lens-flares...
And turn the scene lightning down, so that it makes sense of turning on the headlight ;)

Hey BASSit, Cheers for the tips on the tunnel background :) .....This was really just a test to look at the lighting (preporation for an animation), but I'll keep them in mind. I'll have a look at the glow settings in video post.....But as you said video post can take a lot of setting up...The glow also tends to jump when it is animated. I'll give it a try and post the result soon:D
Also have a look at the back......does it look flat to you?

Cheers..

Yeah, youīre right: itīs really a bit too flat... add a nice spoiler on the end - have a poster on my wall with that car (same stripes ;) but i donīt have a scanner - maybe you know what i mean...

Yeah...I think I know what you mean.....I'll have to do more research then:p ......I'm spending too much time on it though, I'm doing my final project for Uni but I've been working on this instead:p Also do you think the chrome is too bright? I cant make up my mind....

On the tires try diffusing out the specularity, place a mixer in your shader to show the shiny new rubber on the sides and the worn rubber on the treads will lose all shiny aspects.
The mag type wheels are looking Flat, try even a fake reflectance map and diffuse it out.

Something strange in the lighting still. Gotta think about it and look again.

Nice looking model of a viper, did you do this one? Sorry if you already said in a post, but its late, Im getting old, and I cant remember....lol
Nice job so far.

Yeah it is my model......Its my first atempt at Patch modeling a car, well patch modeling anything..lol:D

Hope I didnt offend by asking. Looks good man. And done in patches...hugh...impressive!
What do you think about the tires? No real crit on the car, but interested to see if the tires and mags could improve that last little twinge of reality.
Your using max for this correct?
If so I can send you an example of what I was talking about on those tire materials changing as it goes from sidewall to tread.
Let me know.

Hi ME3D, nah Iwas'nt offended...lol :D.
I agree with the tire thing...I just havent had time to tweak it yet...I'm working on my Final Project for Uni....
I am using max, and I would like to see the tire material you were talking about....could you mail it to me?

Thanks for the pointers.....:p

Look out for my next post..:D

Liquidstudio,
Didnt want ya to think I forgot about ya there.
Couldnt find the network, and remembered I made it at work and sent it to a friend of mine from there.

Look for a it on Monday. I'll send it when I go in to work.

looks good...some interior detail would be very cool....speedometer and all those other knobs.....I have seen ALOT of people model cars but very few that model the interior.

Let me know if you have any questions on that shader when you get the email.
Everyone:
If you interested in what I was speaking of before with shader networking in max.....Well it based on blend map. Thing is you can set the blend to occur in relation to the object or the camera, such as fading from one texture on top to a different texture on the bottom. This also can create effects like on a character when the camera is closer to the front you may want to see finer detail. Then near the back it would eventually fade to less detail. Sorta like D.O.F only not slow to render and more specific top a particular material, or object. Thus more controlable.
This is a generalized explanation of course, but hopefully it will send you in the right direction.
