View Full Version : gaming cards vs. workstation cards ???
sha$xl 06-04-2005, 06:44 PM alright, im not sure what the exact difference is between the two. when i looked at stats for video cards like say the 512mb 6800 ultra and say the 512mb Quadro 4400 i've noticed similar if not exactly the same stats between the two, but the quadro carries a price tag almost 2 times more expensive. plus ive heard that workstation cards suck for gaming, and vice versa for gaming cards. im not in the market to buy any, i just cant tell the difference between the two.
ive searched on google and ask.com but found nothing that helped much at all.

on the subject of gaming cards vs. workstation cards (since I don't really know the two cards in mention)
At work we have machines that are about to run out with 4 years on the back, they mainly use 64 MB RAM CAD graphicscards, it doesn't sound of much in today standard, but they still rock. Not because of the RAM (Of course) but because of the architecture.
I've only seen them a couple of times when support was being done on them, they fill out 2 slots, they have 3+ coolers, and looking at the specs on the net they have different GPU's VPU's and etc.
they do not cose 2 times the gamingcard, more like 10 times.
on our newest workstations we use expensive gamecards instead, they cost 1/10 of the old cards, carries 256 MB RAM, and they run our applications just fine.
Yes, of course we had the expensive cards because we work with some seriously demanding applications, but as the new workstations have proven, they are not demanding compared to whatelse that is out there.
Choose an "expensive" gaming card, unless you are working with something that is higly demanding (I cant think of an example)
What I use at work:
advanced 3D CAD system
Maya 6.0
Photoshop
Corel Draw
all of the apps are of my category of "not demanding" apps. eventhough they can suck up 4x100% CPU power from time to time ;) but thats a different issue
The most difference comes in the drivers when you look at Geforce vs Quadro, or Radeon vs FireGL. There are some minor hardware differences, but in essence the hardware on the whole, is pretty much identical, which is why things like Softmodding work.
I know you can softmod a Geforce to make it think it's a Quadro, but does it work the other way around too? Can you make a Quadro think it's a Geforce?

Why would you want to do that? After paying big $$ for the Quadro in the first place.
If you have some elaborate scheme to switch back and forth between the 2 settings with just one card, you might as well buy a cheaper GeForce card and mod it into a Quadro, switch it back to GeForce when you want to play a game.

Quadros will run games, after all game designers use them for both 3D work and testing the game.

Your software of choice will make a huge difference in the difference you see. If you use LightWave, save your maoney and buy a gaming card.

Well, cost aside, I figured I'd want the power (and the compatibility) of the Quadro for Maya. But it'd be nice if I could trick it into using the latest Geforce drivers for games. Just a thought. I've only ever used gaming cards, so I don't know much about the workstation cards anyway.

There is no difference in game performance between a Quadro 4400 and a 6800 Ultra 512MB when both are run at the same clock speed. Any difference that you will see in benchmarks is due in large part to the 6800U running at a higher clock speed.

Yeah, check the latest gamepc (http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=qfx4400&page=1&MSCSProfile=95385A1F52DEA1A229D5B375420544646908A7AFC9764C3478C9B53638E59CC91636958E57244D30B5632C2D115176A7538D6D88342AE87040D27EB58E21F8A525481803D8F762255C898331AA479BF06EE717EE800CFBBF578AC066EFC338A062860B3D711DC12183AC3D857B5D1D9D298D9340A4D63123D53A1E1A81385F874A770FBA4C185E42) review of the Quadro 4400. The difference might as well be testing error in some cases.
