View Full Version : Maya EnterEditMode Crashing
Six60Sicks 10-15-2002, 06:51 PM I haven't yet ran into a error in maya i couldn't fix or get around... until now. It seems 90% of the time when pressing Insert to enter edit mode maya will have a fatal error and close... thankfully maya will say it is attempting to save the file to a temporary directory... how nice. When navigating to said directory the first time i noticed it was not there. ... so I made the directory. NExt time it happened i went tho that dir and no file. So i attempted to change the path where it saves to.... i couldn't find where I could specify this. So after much cursing and training myself to NEVER press insert, I went on with my life. THis caused problems for moving pivots, joints, and such.... It seems to happen too randomly... i cannot find the steps that cause it to crash... i have tried many times to recreate the problem changing slight things. I Found for a long time if i turned off all construction history that I had a 50/50 chance that it would crash. I'M SICK OF IT. anyway.... just wondering if anyone could help. If they will help, I have screen shots before and after the "attempting to save" dialog box. Running on a HP VIsualize dual 866 with 2 gig ram, elsa quadro, winblows 2000.

wuha.. that sounds grim.. it reminds me of an old bug i hade some years ago, when maya died, when i hit e to rotate or had sw particles displayed.. was a driver issue there.
but with a quadro card this really should not happen:
anyway would i recommend to:
- install new drivers
- throw away (or maybe just rename) the folder where your maya settings are stored.. this helps in a lot cases where you dont know what could be wrong
concerning the saved file issue: maya does not save your scene under the scene name, but under a name with the date and time in it. so dont look for your scene name, but rather an .ma file (i think it always writes .ma files)..
good luck and hope it helped
cheers

I'll try getting rid of the settings dir. As for the saved file... maya states it is trying to save the file as Administrator.date.number.ma.... i searched both hard drives for any and all files with .ma or .mb and can't find it. Also searched for all files with administrator with no luck. I can't believe there is no obvous way to change this directory. Also why does maya give a path in DOS like format.... replacing long file names with ~1.... Maya supports long filenames... so maybe they just wanted to fit it all in the dialog... maybe they should just use smaller text. Thanks for the help... i hope it works.

maya saves those files by default to your TMP/TEMP directory.
you can change that one in the windows environment settings..
by default it is located to your personal directory (sorry no clue what it is called in english version.. something like "documents and settings" i would guess..
good luck

alexx is right, I have had Maya crash before and had to go find the saved file. You can do a search for the saved files on your HD but first... You need to go to your folder settings
In any window(not Maya, just WIN) go to Tools/folder options, click on the views tab, and set the show all folders and files button . Apply and close the window. Then run a search for all .ma files, narrow it down to your Documents and Settings folder. You should find them that way.
Windows typically buries your TEMP folder into a hidden area, so you dont accidentally delete it.
As to your problem, when Maya crashes it is typically running out of memory. When your computer crashes, it is because of drivers and hardware conflicts. So my advice with Maya is not to turn off construction history, but you MUST delete it every once in a while.
If using NURBS delete the construction history every time you rebuild a surface or merge isoparms, etc.
With polys you can usually stretch it out longer, but if you merge a bunch of verts or edges. And splitting things alot. Delete the history more often. Make a DEL Hist button you can put up on your shelf to remind you to do it alot. You should stop having problems. If not keep narrowing it down, and asking for more help here. We have some good people on this thread, like alexx.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure why I never changed the folder settings.... I guess I never realized that the search will not find hidden files. Had this box for 4 months now and never changed the folder settings. anyway thanks for the heads up on that.
As far as the construction history... I realize that construction history can really bog things down... I frequently delete construction history. I have had this problem on objects with no construction history. history turned off all together. Your comment on memory got me thinking... I got this Visualize about 4 months ago, it has 2 gigs of ram... I don't believe I have done anything nasty enuff to use all that ram. It is a possibility maybe there is a problem with the ram on a physical level... This computer was previously leased to a company... although it looks brand new... and I checked out everything as I usually build my own systems. I also did not install the OS myself because I was too excited to get working on it and it already had one installed, looked clean and minimal.
Thanks for the help... got me thinking on a few more ideas to try... after i re install my os... just for purity atleast.
One more quick question if anyway is still paying attention. My visualize came from a authorized HP reseller and has a WIndowsNT licsense offical sticker and product idea number on the outside of the case. I haven't bought a retail computer before, so I had to buy OS myself.. and was wondering if that sticker means I legally own a copy of windows NT and if so can I order replacement media(probably for some cash)? THe system came loaded with win2K, and no media... which seems sketchy to me.

If this belonged to another company before, tehre is probably something to that. Using Win2K Pro there is a lot of stuff going on in the background processes. I am not an expert on all of those things, unfortunately, but you can go into the OS and start messing with stuff on an experimental level. They probably have everything set up for networking and folder sharing and all that jazz. I can't remember offhand how to turn off the networking and other services, but I think you can get to it through your add/remove programs area. Then click on a button on the left hand side for windows components. If anything sounds dicey, then you might want to ask a techie before you turn it off. I have really messed up my system by playing with too much stuff that way.
Good Luck!
It sounds like that you have the same computers as they have at my school and those things work really well. I don't really know what is happening on your system.

If im working for an extending period of time, at random and without any warning (and it seems only if i havent saved in a while) My comp just restarts itself, as in it turns off and starts over. Dont know what causes it and its a pain in the ass, but it doesnt seem to happen as often if i save a lot :) i guess its my comps way of messing with me :)
Happy Rendering!!!!.........and Crashing!!!

That is a heat problem, I think.
You might need a new power supply, boost it up to at least 300W or 350W. I hope it doesn't kill what you are working on at the time.
You might be running out of virtual memory also, but that can be cured by restarting the program not restarting the computer. Or shutting down IE6, that thing kills my memory.

i didnt say i restart the computer, im saying it does! It only happens when im working in maya........the comp turns itself off and restarts. And as i said it tends to happen when i havent saved in a while therefore causing me to redo what i just worked on :(
