I don't know what reviews have you read , but I found CS more robust than Previous Illustrator. I think Illustrator 9 was the most sufficient , I had several problems with Illustrator 10 and CS is working fine so far. It is also more feature-packed. Another thing. I have an Epson 3170 Photo. I had Illustrator 10 at the time I bought it and I couldn't,for some reason I don't even now know, use the main scan utility. It was like the scanner was frozen or something. With CS ( and 10 being removed ) everything is fine. But I was the only person I had this problem!

I used CS in school and I was impressed with the product. Like others, I was using v9 prior to CS. Good luck to you.

I use CS and it works for me. I know nothing of the CAD tools though. There have been a few problems with the color picker for some reason, but I think that was just an isolated incident.

I have used previous versions as well...from 8, 9 and 10. Though it's never been that extensive until I took a class on learning Illustrator and Photoshop.

The two best Adobe programs, Photoshop and After Effects, have splash pages that lists the creators of the programs. I think it is because some of the original program teams still have a hand in the making. All of their corporate faceless programs, where the splash page shows just Adobe as the creator, are very flawed and struggle for user respect.

Illustrator has a lot of problems that have never been addressed. It is quite amazing that there isn't a good 2D vector program out there. There still is some choice, but after the Macromedia merger there will even be less room for improvement. Freehand in its last Windows release has fixed many bugs, but Macintosh users will most likly never see a working version. Expression has come the closest to ideal vector control, it even has b-splines, but still has major holes in the tool set and now that MS has bought it we know where it will end up. Many 3D programs have better spline tools than the 2D apps but miss the finishing 2D image manipulations.

Photoshop is becoming dangerously close to bloatware. InDesign, which of the corporate ware has some appeal, is trying to please both Quark users and PageMaker users and thus was born as bloatware. I think that if Adobe gets their act together, in addition to giving programers the creative credit for the work they do (splash page), they would build their own linux graphic operating system and finally get into the 3D market.

Go for CS! AS a graphic designer I use Illustrator CS daily alongside Photoshop CS and Indesign CS. I've never had any stability problems with it at all. The 3D feature in it is the only feature I don't really like, it is quite slow and doesn't shade objects as good as I would like without having to expand its appearance and manually changing colours. The only bug, and it is a well known Adobe bug, is that if you have thousands of fonts on your computer, it might crash on loading. That being said, I use Extensis Suitcase to manage my fonts, so that I only turn on the fonts I need, so that bug isn't a problem for me anyway.

I've been looking at CS2 now though, Illustrators Livetrace and Livepaint features look preety cool.

Just my 2 cents!
