It is possible to edit the visual content of an AVI with Blender. AFAIK you can't edit a Quicktime with Blender.

The audio content of a video can be edited as well, but Blender can't save Video+sound together. It can save a .avi with the visuals, and a .wav with the audio ... then you can put those 2 together with another software... so, in resume, better user another video editting software and skip Blender alltogether for video editing.

yes..up to a point and depending on your platform/os (on *nix video-codecs are not supported -yet-)

just use the sequence-editor

For the record, OS X users and Windows users with QuickTime installed can edit (i.e. import and export) QuickTime movies in Blender just as easily as AVIs.
