View Full Version : duplicating reference objects

Hi,
I'm using Maya 6.
I have an environment in one scene into which I'm bringing references of a tree model I made.
I'm doing this as the tree texture isn't finished and I want all referenced trees to update at once when i change the texture. I'm bringing in the trees, and shifting the roots around a bit to fit. Trouble is, it seems like when I duplicate a reference object, the duplicate is no longer a reference (According to the outliner). Duplicating seems to break the reference. This is really inconvenient, as it means I have to bring trees in one by one, rather than just duplicate the references. Any ideas on how to duplicate referenced objects and maintain the duplicates as references?
Thanks,

Simon

Duplicating as Instance might be what you want, the shape will still be in the reference, but a new non-referenced transform will be added. The only problem is instancing referenced objects doesn't work that well, and you'll tend to lose shading connections if you load/unload the reference.

Given that limitation, your best bet is probably to reference the same file multiple times.
