View Full Version : 2-D/3-D Animated Short: CRABAPPLE
Isopod 06-02-2005, 06:51 PM Hey guys,
I just finished uploading my animated short "CRABAPPLE" and wanted to share. It's a mixture of 2-D and 3-D animation with toon shading. The 2-D part was drawn by hand, digitized while the 3-D was done in Maya and rendered with toon shading and Particle effects were done with Blender, finally were all composited in After Effects.

Thanks Haus, glad you liked it. I''m pretty sure you could do toon-shading in Max, but I don't have any idea if it's natively possible. I'm sure there's a 3rd party plug-in somewhere.

I so totally agree, that's so freakin cool! Amazing job man.
I love Blender and use it all the time. 2.37 just released you know :D
Did you use Blender Internal, Yafray or something else?

The Robot was done in Maya while Blender was used for the particle effects. If you go to my site, there's a "Making of" video that shows a clip of Blender. Thanks for the heads up about Blender 2.37 being released. I'll go download it now.
Vivec: I know what you mean, but the project has to be done very cheaply (time and budget-wise) :D Now that I graduated from the university, I can afford more time to polish up my next animated short instead of worrying about an African Art exam the next day.
Thanks guys,

Hi Isopod !
Great movie I like it a lot (make me laugh LOL !!!)
your 2D got my eye much more then the 3D since I came from 2D myself... and Always LOVE 2D Animation.... but you blended both together real good ! I love the final resault !!!
about the 2D Part - did you created it using Paperless Animation Wacom Tablet/Cintiq ? or something like that or draw using papers and scanned ?
and.. what program did you use for the 2D can you descibce the process please ?
Any more Animations to see from you would be great !!!
Keep up the good working !!!

Kayoto: Thanks! Glad you liked it! Now about the 2-D part:
Everything starts off on paper. Rough animations on paper, I still flip through several pieces checking the arcs etc.
Then they are PENCIL TESTED:
I use a light table that has taped pegs on it, then I take a picture of each drawing with a digital camera .The digital pictures are then brought to After Effects and I then make a Quicktime movie to see if they are alright.
Then the drawings are cleaned up and traced on a new sheet of paper with a mechanical pencil (a .03 B lead). They are scanned in (I have a peg taped to the scanner as well to maintain registration) In Photoshop, I play with the LEVELS to make the pencil strokes black and the white pixels I automatically delete using a plugin called "Eliminate White" (you can find this using Google, although this only works up to Photoshop 7, not in CS)
I then color the drawings. This is when I use my OLD Wacom Intuos tablet (a wimpy 4 x 5) to digitally color the drawings...I make sure they are named appropriately. I compile all the drawings for a sequence into a single Photoshop file where each drawing is in separate layers. I import the PSD file in After Effects as a composition and combine all the other elements together....
Whew! That was a mouthful...if you want a short peek at the behind the scenes, I have a "Making of" video HERE (Quicktime 43 MB) (http://www.weakchild.com/media/crabapple/makingofcrabapple.mov) in my website--- right click, save...
I hope the next animated short would be even better! Thanks again for showing interest.

Very Cool !
I'm downloading the "Making of" Right now and gonna watch it, looks interesting !
I'm asked this question of you created, because I saw many animations created with a program named Mirage (the new generation of AURA) and I tought your animation made totaly paperless but I was wrong, not that it's matter the final resault is amazing !
When I create my 2D Animations, I use my wacom Cintiq (my old Intuos 2 is great but not like draw exactly on the Cintiq - cost so much money and worth it !) so I work totaly paperless, I just move around from programs to see what is the best for me, when I get into compositing I use Combustion (I feel there at home).
thanks for your explnation, I can't wait to see your next animations !
Keep up the good working !

Skills bro  It's nice to see someone who actually knows and understands anime unlike the crap that is unloaded out a Newgrounds. Your visuals are top notch but if you spend a little more time on the sndfx this would be right up there.
Also the way you matched the 3D with the 2D was just great!
Good stuff.
Great fusion of 3D and 2D animation. Keep up the good work! Anime rocks!
