I'm not familiar with Painter, but I'm sure there is a blending tool on the program.
The picture is on the right path though. Don't worry about it being too blurry or undefined, work in layers (figuratively), and work in more detail overall step by step, and itll look perfect.
High marks.

Depending on what I am doing, my favorite default blending tool is "liquid - just add water". It really works well if you want smooth stuff.

Right now it's looking too blended. Her fingers seem to have melted onto her belly and she looks flat against the wall. I realize that you're still blocking out colors, but you might try painting layer by layer like so (if you're not already ;) ):
Layer 1: background
Layer 2: block in base colors. Use solid colors, no blending.
Layer 3: add detail such as eyes, lips, fingernails, etc
Layer 4: add shadows and highlights
With shading, your subject is pretty close to the camera so shadows should be sharp and distinct and so should the highlights. Don't be afraid of making shadows dark, but avoid black. As for blending, you can use the smudge tool. The icon looks like an index finger. You can change the tip size to get into hard to reach spaces. You can also alter the opacity -- 100% will allow you to drag a color in a solid line. I usually work at 50% opacity.
Hope that's not too elementary. . . and that I answered your question.
Enjoy the new tablet!
thanks guys!
Great advice, I am redoing it in layers its better already.
Thanks Again
I have just finished blocking in the shadows.
Am I headed in the right direction, as far as placement and colours?
damn hands are hard!

For blending in Painter, I recommend using the same brush you're using to paint--if you're using regular Oils, set the Resaturation (at the top of the screen) to 0; if you're using Artists' Oils, set the Paint Amount (in the Artists' Oils brush controls) to 0.

yup that's what i do! set it to 0
...for hair some people use the palette knife and the smudge tool (for hair tips)...personally i think the medium bristle oils brush is the best for underpainting...it feathers when you "pick up the brush" from the canvas...basically creating natural looking hair. for blocking in colors, I like to use oil pastels, it has a much looser look and blends together by itself
you may want to try b/w first, then adjust the colors to sepia/whatever and then start working...i don't do this but many artists do and it helps you get your lighting down.
when blending with the paint amount at 0, should everything be on the same layer.
sorry bout all the specific questions.

well, depending on your layer setup you prolly don't have to. also, if you have "pick up underlying color" checked it will help blend colors when you paint...just a thought.

Gah all i've heared you lot go on about the resaturation but your leaving out the bleed, this will determine how much you want the colours to mix, erm it isnt a very good meaning but just play around with it on a different clean canvas and just try and get your best settings.
TIP: Draw a circle and block colour it with 3-4 differnt coulours then just blend them in, keep redoing till you are comfortable.

I use the Palette Knife and have the resaturation set to 0 and the bleed betweem 3-4. I sometimes use the palette knife to put the initial colours down too. I'm also a beginner at using patiner :D Robert chang has some great brushes on his website that u can download :) http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/main_page/home.htm
thanks so much guys, you have all been so helpful.
I will keep posting my progress,
Hope I can use all u have told me.
