View Full Version : Smooth round edges on disc or barrel etc.
Orkman 06-01-2005, 05:11 PM Hi, I tried SubD's but it won't smooth the edges out and give me a clean round edge. Here is what I have and would like to smooth out so there is no faceting.

LW won't turn the caps into sub-d's because they are n-gons. So, select the caps, bevel slightly (probably a couple times). Then, delete the cap poly (the one you originally selected and beveled). Select all the points around the opening in the mesh, and weld to average. This will give you a couple rows of 4-point polys around the edge, and then triangles into the middle. If you get wierd creases within the circle of tri's, merge them 2 at a time into 4 point polys. Or, there is a plug-in the ships with LW that will do this for you - Spikey, I think?
What you can do is this: Delete the top and bottom polys, make 4 point polys to close the top and bottom. Or you can use a script called, "Disc Closer", look for it on Flay. Then cut another row of polys with the Knife tool on the sides as close as you can get to the top row of points, do this on the bottom also. Slide the new rows of points over those on the top and bottom. Select the top and bottom polys with the Lasso tool, cut and paste back in place but do not merge points. Sud D the top and bottom, smooth the sides. You may have to adjust the roundness of the object as it might warp a little from the Sud D.
Hope that helps...or just create the disc at an extremely hi poly count...

One way is to make a sphere, start dragging in top view. THen select all point and use set value(shortcut=v) to put all the points on y=0. THen merge(shortcut=m) and unify(shortcut=shift+i). Extrude the resulting disc to get a cylinder with a top and bottom that will smooth when you press Tab.

simple trick. Do a bandsaw on the row of polygons with values set at 0.5 % and 99.5%
For the cap, do a Add Pole, Fix Pole. Select the row of quads generated by the fix pole tool and apply the same type of bandsaw.

Ok I am going to try a few of these methods. As for the Disc Closer, when I run the script it gives me an error in Line 1 and fails. Any tips? Thanks for all the help!

Telamon,
Out of interest I tried your make pole and fix pole trick. Unless I've got it wrong it seems to run into problems where you want the corners to remain sharp(ish) i.e. where the piece is cut out. The lines obviously need to cut across each other there.
In the end I did it sort of manually, cutting and beveling in 2d then extruding. My mesh looked like this.

Sorry to hijack your thread Orkman, but also interested in the quick'n'easy route.
I guess while I think about it the best method would be to forget metanurbs. Just make the shapes in poly mode as hi-res as needed, boolean the cut and then use Rounder on the edges to give the chamfer. In theory :)

@RPG, I did the test too. I obviously had to split the 3/4 disc in two for make pole to work properly. It is quite simple anyway for not a too bad result
Anyway, your result looks much better than mine ;)
