Title: Mantra
Name: Thomas Juul Krahn
Country: Denmark
Software: Photoshop, Vue

I created Mantra just before my fifteenth birthday, Dec, 2002. - A study in lighting and composition. I just wanted to make to the viewer go "Wow" and say: "That's where I want to go!".

I updated it a few months ago because I wanted to try and submit it for inclusion in Expose 3. I really liked the concept and lighting, but I was starting to feel I could enhance it.
It's a not a complete remake, but there are a lot of subtle changes.

hi thomas, i know the pic, i think its somewhat popular around the net ;)
i fiddled around with vue some time ago and stumbled over your pic.
a very nice and interesting mood. what did you change since?

i think there are some more branches between the palms, aren't there?

anyway the lighting and setting are very nice. the sun is very powerful. its a good picture, what you were able to sell as a poster i'll bet

perhaps the water shader could be some mor detailed. and the shadows on the ground could be more softshadowed, since the light would break up i think, when it shines thru such a thick fog.

There's a nice feeling in your picture, but as some other samples of your work, which looked very good by the way, I find the foreground of your scene way too dark, especially for a lithing study. there should defenitly be a strong contrast in the typa scenes you chose between foreground and background, but not as radical as you did set it up here. I'd like to see a more progressive attenuation of the light from the background to foreground, with in the end more indirect illumination brighting up the rocks on both sides. You played very well with depth from foreground to background, but somehow neglected the vertical axis of your picture, there's a lot to play with as well from the top to the bottom of you picture. All that foreground rocky surface seems to serve no purpose in the end. with a different lighting set up, playing with refraction/reflection of light on the water could have given very neat effects on the lower part of the rock/cave on foreground.

So, nice set up, but still needs a lot of tweaks and adjustements to make it to Expose if you ask me, my own opinion of course.

Keep it up!

you make me feel terrible. when i was 15 i had just discovered Corel Dream3d, the 3d program that came with Corel Photopaint 8, and was busy making moodily lit spheres and cubes :) awesome work.

Why not just submit the original render? That is far superior to my mind, I have it right here before me with the VUE extra's. This is not a great reworking.

I'm sorry to hear you dont like the update Rokol. I can however not see how the old one can be so much better than this one. The only things I've changed are some rough edges on the cliff, and replaces some old vegetation with some new and much more detailed.

Thanks for the comments so far :)

Hi Thomas, didn't mean to say that it was awful or anything. Feel that the shadows are a bit flat on the foreground cliffs.

Hi Thomas, if you're able to make pictures of that quality at that age, I suggest you just ignore any and all negative comments. In every picture there is something to enhance/tweak/improve/whatsoever, but what you have made is simply beautiful, almost great. The strong contrast is definitely necessary to bring out the feeling of arriving somewhere (as well as being good to the overall composition), and if the foreground shadows (sorry to pick this up, whoever it was) are not to somebody's liking, just ignore it. You know perfectly well where you are going, and if any improvement is needed, you'll find it in time and judge yourself. I for one couldn't tell how to actually visibly improve on this one.

Thank you everyone! I'm honoured to have recieved such a great response. Concerning feedback, I don't mind critiscm at all. It's very nice to hear what other people think and how they beleive I can improve my images - but you're of course also right Suuki - I make images the way I think they should look like and not how people tell me they should, but none the less, I really appreciate getting feedback and hearing others ideas so I can improve and learn.

Again, thanks everyone :)

I have admired this picture for years.
I always wondered how you went about creating the translucent effect on the leaves.

I would definately want to be there ( minus the mosquitos ... and searing humidity ... and ... and ..... but ' your world ' wouldn't have anything like that would it now ? )

Its cool to see anyone from the same age i am, to win a cgtalk award.
Cause i have some problems with really finishing my work, like the master-servant challenge

i love the image, the contrast really makes me feel like i am really there. although i have never used vue, it should not have been that easy to make such vegetation.

A great reminder of happy days on Renderosity - now there is no more such ambience there :-(

This picture is a kind of icon for whole Vue community - when I try to recall best Vue pictures I saw for the first time on renderosity , this is the one I remember the best.

Excellent composition!

I am looking forward for your new pictures :-))

Not to say that this isn't a very nice picture, but aren't you making use of quite standard options in Vue? What have you exactly modelled yourself? Having played with Vue myself, this pictures gives the impression of a very Vue-flavoured one...

I'm agree with dwerf, but I haven't paly with vue, looks really "dejā-vus" elements and trees.
But I have to admit that the final result is really beautiful and a very suggestive atmosphere, congrats...!

wow, that's where i want to go he he :p

it's awesome, but somehow the edges of the cliffs are too 'edgy', made the whole pic looked a bit unreal, or else, i would've tot it's an awesome real photography and 'the place i want to go' do exist anyways, it's beautiful

you have passed -A study in lighting and composition. excellent work. how many programs was this image exposed to would you say? from start to finish?

thomaskrahn
08-29-2005, 01:55 PM
Thank you so much everyone! :)

Davezak: Thanks man! This program was created using 3 programs - Xfrog 3.5 for the plants, Vue d'Esprit 4 for the final render, and Photoshop CS for some minor texturework and postwork.
