"Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is launching its first PC microprocessors with two computing engines on a single chip Tuesday, further expanding its product line with a technology that's expected to be a major driver of PC performance for years to come

The four chips to be announced Tuesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan are targeted at high-end personal computers used for advanced tasks such as creating or editing digital media. In April, AMD introduced dual-core chips for servers and workstations.

sounds pretty good but the AMD price is awfully higher!

They don't plan on making that a permanent situation. They're also apparently going to do away with
single-core Athlon64's altogether, and leave the single-core stuff for the budget segments.

The comment about the price being "double" the Pentium D is *very* misleading - a $537 2.2GHz X2 is faster than a $530 3.2 P4D, so actually the prices are on par. Only thing is AMD has a higher entry point. If you want a slower cheaper part, you can go P4D. Me, I'm hangin' out for the X2 :bounce:

The entry level P4D is $250, so there's nothing misleading about it. It's simply arithmetic.

You're right that it's slower, but let's face it, it's going to sell a lot more than AMD's will
until AMD starts putting lower-priced models on the market, because it IS half the price.

That said, I also intend to go with the X2 rather than the P4D, due primarily to the
difference in performance. But to do it, odds are I'll have to pay 2x as much for the
processor, since I hope to get my new machine this summer, which is probably sooner
than AMD will launch lower-priced X2's.

Yeah, but they're comparing apples with oranges. They make it sound like the AMD's are twice as expensive as the P4's when they're not.

But yes, cheaper AMD parts would sure be nice! From AMD's point of view, it sounds like they don't have that many parts to put into the market for a while, so I guess it makes sense to sell higher end parts and make more money.

True, but since it significantly raises the cost of entry for the x2 vs the P4D, it's not misleading, it's just
unfortunate.

It worked when AMD launched the Athlon64, so it stands to reason that it ought to work now :)
During that quarter and the following quarter, their unit sales dropped, but their revenues increased.
So I'd say that they're doing something right here. :)

The fact that they have the faster product helps a lot; the wouldn't be able to convince ANYONE to pay
2x the price for an x2 vs a P4D otherwise -- even if it's a high-end AMD product being compared to a
low-end Intel product. However, since it IS faster, those that want dual cores on a budget will buy P4D's
in droves, and those that want higher single-threaded throughput AND dual-cores will wait until they can
get an AMD x2, whether it means saving more or waiting for lower cost parts to show up.
