View Full Version : Everytime I try to render out AVI's Max crashes
Romero 06-01-2005, 09:27 AM Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't really understand what the deal is. Every time I go to render out a avi, max will just close completely. Anyone else ever have this problem before, any solutions?
Thanks

Do you have max 6? Then try the SP1 update.

What kind of "avi" do you mean? I suppose that uncompressed. Or this doesn't matter and it's crashing with all types? I always render uncompressed and then I use some video editing program to convert it. Or maybe, you should try some other codec than cinepak and you'll see if the problem remains.

conny's right -
3ds max 6 Service Pack 1 - Updated Avi.bmi (http://www.discreet.com/support/max/download/download.php3)
Last updated: June 17, 2004
Updated AVI.bmi for correcting the AVI file save error. This update services the save to AVI file format feature for 3ds max 6 or 3ds max 6.1 English. The English update can also be applied to localized installs of 3ds max, but the AVI specific dialogs will appear in English.
To install, unzip avi.bmi to the \3dsmax6\stdplugs folder

Max SP1 might fix it in some cases, but certainly not with all of them. I've always had this problem. The best way to get around it is to render to a different format, and then use another app to convert it to avi.
When I've asked, people have told me that I probably have corrupt codecs - though other apps have no problems with them.

vormav is right.
if it's for a preview i load the frames into the ram player and save it to an avi from there directly - no need for AFX etc.
re codecs - I think some codecs like DIVX and XVID need the resolution to be divisible by 4.

Just downloaded the Service pack 1 for max 6 and tryed rendering a scene again. Unfortunatly I am having the same problem. As soon as I hit save, max just completely closes , there was no max has experienced an error and will now close it just completly closes. I could just render out a sequence and then toss it into premiere, but this is time consuming, and really a route i didn't want to take. Any other of you wizards have any bright ideas, because I would love to hear them.
Thanks,

I never had this problem till a couple months ago, and then couldn't do avi's, it seems that avi.bmi thing did the trick, thanx, thats been bothering me for a while

Suddenly I got all kind of problems rendering to avi with max 7.
Same problem when render directly to avi or through VP or RAM player.
Re-installing the codec package from MS seems to fix the problem here.

I get this problem from time to time, simple solution for me though, if you find its crashing as a avi, render it as something like a .mov and then try .avi again , if its anything like mine the problem should have gone :)

Yes, DivX has restrictions for resolution size, it must be multiple of 4, but Xvid hasn't got this limmitation as far as I know.
What I always recommend is saving your movie as a sequence of bitmaps (bmps or for better control-tgas) and then use MAX or another application to compose them.
