wedge 10-15-2002, 05:35 AM Which renders faster? Displacement converted into the mesh, or displacement calculated at render time?

i don t think it will make a difference

Probably displacement calculated at rendertime. But then again, probably only if memory is going to be an issue. Not really sure how Maya does it. If only we could all use PRMan

it is not about rendertimes in this case i would say.
maya does the displacement tesselation before rendering. that results in huge amount of polygon data and thus in an enormous amount of RAM used..
renderman does that while calculating the pixels and thus is able to do a displacement on a per pixel basis without having to use all that memory..

In regards to: "..Displacement converted into the mesh..."
Will maya calculate the displacement into the mesh automatically or are you talking about adding the geometry yourself. If so where can I choose this option? Too clarify.... say i have a plane and i wanted to make... say, a brick wall.... but i wish show this wall very close to the camera making the the smallest bump a fairly large boulder.... can I use a displacement map "converted into the mesh" to create the geometry and see it/edit it in the hardware texture view?
