in Maya 4.5 i created this simple scene to show you the problem i am having...here it is...

when i go to select a poly sphere and make it soft with a duplicate, and i select the soft particles then shift select the poly sphere, it turns white. when i zoom way in with mmb and rmb the white goes away and back to the shader i have assigned and when i zoom back out the white returns again. any sugestoins?

i have found that in the Prefrences under Display that Affected highlighting takes away the whiteness when you parent an emitter to geometry and select the geometry, but that option does not take away the whitness for the situation i discribed...any sugestions please let me know...

Thanks :bounce:

dont know if this helps...but when rigging....the vertex weights turn white....for a weight of 1 and black for a weight of 0....kinda like an alpha channel. I dont know what this has to do with softbodies but perhaps it is related

i think that it is a way of showing whats attached to the emitter, or softbody. since i was able to turn off the one with parenting an emitter, i would think that it would be possible to turn off the white when you use soft bodies...weird....anyone know Please let me know..

Thanks so much..

I just ran into another 'white' issue.

i created a new scene, all default lambert shaders, and created one particle (made it sphere mode so easier for you all to see) and translated it aside. I then made a Polygon Cube and scaled it up, and when i unselect everything the Poly Cube turns completely white! any sugestions on how to rid of this whiteness....(wireframe on shaded turned on for your viewing also)
and when i zoom in (mmb + lmb + alt) into the cube, when i get to a sertin closeness, the white goes away....

i've been having the same prob
the funny thing is, it doesnt happen all the time
on this latest scene i used particle insancing and some objects turned white.. even though they werent related to the particles
if i went and played with selection contrainsts it would sometimes go back to normal and then go back to full white.
quite strange.
once the emittor/particles were removed it stopped.

continue to post in this if you find any more developments..

i have discovered a temporary solution for some of the whitness, move all particle object to the bottom of the outliner...enjoy :)

I know when using particles and the particles shader is put on it and you have clouds as the particle shape it will do something similar but with green.

I have been running into the same problems with particles and grouping. Its not a goal issue either. Its a glitch. If you zoom into the object with white the color changes back to normal, zoom out and it changes back(at least it does for me). Guess we have to wait for 4.5.1.:D
