Hi,
i have tried everything, but when i make an .OBJ file for import into XSI it always comes out a total mess... Anyone any experience and tips they can pass on?
I thought Lightwave generated a clean mesh.. it's really baffling...
thanks

Hi MArll,

Try Mark Wilson's Plug at

You didn't really say much about the object or what it is doing in XSI. Are you trying to get a subpatch object across into XSI?

yes, sorry, it is a subpatch object.
it's a character i modelled in LW.
although i have ensured that the mesh is clean in LW [i.e. no polys with more than 4 sides and cleaned up the points] when i bring the obj file into XSI, the first wierd thing is that the object appears black in the viewport. When i try and select the mesh it appears to be broken into segements... finally when i turn on subpatch in xsi some of the polys are unaffected and stay as straight edged polys.
oh, and it also does not bring in the materials i have made either...
hope this clarifies things a bit...

actually, now i have used the plugin recommended by fletchman, it is telling me that bad polys have been detected... but i can't see how... i have done everything i can to clean up the mesh... what's going on??

Use FBX plugin instead of the .obj exporter.

We used it in here and gave us very nice results, it even exports the Morphs and puts them on a compound on the XSI timeline.

Materials settings (Spec, Color etc ) are ported also.

The all black mesh is because XSI has an extra parameter called (off the top of my head) "User Normals". Because the OBJ format doesn't support it, XSI guesses at a value, which means the mesh always comes out looking black.
Solution = Open the object in the scene explorer, navigate to the poly options and look for a cluster called (probably) "User Normals", then just delete it.
HERE (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=2003259&postcount=90) I've listed two small script commands that will delete all unwanted clusters. Just attach to a toolbar and you have a reusable command. Beware, the second script command deletes ALL imported clusters, including any UV maps you might have, so make sure you use the right one.
As for your other problem, I'm not sure, but check for two point polys in the original mesh, it's about all I can think of.

Well, you know, i have looked for these damn plugins about everywhere and cannot find them for download. As far as i can see, Kayadara no ;onger exist... Bought out by Alias and cannot find them on their site either... Know where I CAN get them?
