I prefer the first over the second. It appears to have real depth. The second has colors that look abit washed out and it seems to have a very artifical dimension. What is strange is that from the thumbnails I assumed the second would be better looking then the first. Just an observation.
However, I read from another thread by Apollix that this may be due to the monitor techinology of today not being able to produce a wide enough range of color to justify a simple still render of an HDRI quality render; the outcome being that the color information is not being displayed in full.
It may be that if you print it out it'd have a better quality, but
you might need a expensive high quality photo printer to get the highest results.
For a pretty thorough explaination (and more accurate, I suppose) of 4x32 image quality and HDRI, check out the thread called "I'm Dumb, Please Learn Me".

In my opinion these are very good images!
How did you create the waves? with textures? are them easily animatable? can you post the wireframe?

For me, the second one is more realistic than the first... both are quite good anyways.
The first one looks fake bacuse water, at least looked at this scale, doesn't have that much overal turbulence. Can you post images with a boat, an island or something else so we can asses the relative scale of the scene?

Ever heard of bandwith? Cgtalk is slow enough as it is. There are way more user @ cgtalk than elysiun. Imagine 1million users uploading one 1mb file.....

Here's a good opportunity to plug www.putfile.com (http://www.putfile.com). Putfile.com is neat-o! Putfile.com.

IMO, the second one looks better than the first. The first just looks like reclective plastic. The second one looks more like water. But nice job, keep it up.

I like the surface look of both images. It would depend on the final effect I was looking for as to which one I'd use.
Personally though, with the angle of the camera, I'd probably try to do something along the lines of
http://www.blenderman.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=15
with the volumetric water tutorial.
And try to get some depth to the liquid, and place a fish or some submerged object in there.
