Hey
Im relativly new to 3d modeling about 6 months into it and thease are some of my best tell me what you think.
BTW the robot is still a work in progress (any head ideas?)

Ps the only modling technique I have ever used is Sphere modeling know of any other good max techniques?

Six months into 3D, welcome to our obsession,..

I like the sky in the first shot, even if it is a bit linear.

I do not care for the linearity in the water, looks like some tiling is going on or the raytracer is picking up some geomertry that would be better excluded.

Robo WIP looks like a fun project. It is never too early to pose your creation for a test shot, render in a white room, create some shadows and reflections for example. Just putting the camera in a more interesting location would help that shot let alone a little staging and raytrace reflection work.

Final suggestion - never let objects clip in your renderings. The round (wheels on a pool que) objects appears to be clipping the white plane.

As far as other modeling techniques I would say it is never to early to learn spline cage modeling, though most tweak with mesh models for a while before going there...
keep having fun - untill it is your job then keep sane!
