Suitable way depends on the resolution and quality requirements.
Few ways comes to my mind...
- If you need a quick and cheapo way, get a DV camera and shoot that backlit against a black canvas and comp that over your footage using screen mode. Fast and easy.
- Try one of the stock footage services. Relatively fast and easy.
- Do it CG somehow; 3D particles and a volumetric renderer or 2D for instance with an animated Fractal Noise generator in AE. May not that be that easy or that fast but will get you there.
Good luck!

Create a view strokes/ lines and displace them using various effects (Turbulent Displace, Vortex etc.). It's much simpler than setting up anything with particles. If in AE 6.5, you could also use the CC Vector Blur applied to a b/w image and then blurred.

...or just take that clip you think looks like smoke, and drop the opacity down to say, 10%. Alien Skin is not so hot.
