View Full Version : Cars and all that comes with it
Jann-Lee 02-17-2002, 02:12 AM Hey people,
im a 3d newb, i only recently started modeling and I find it very hard and time consuming. Nevertheless the feeling i get after modeling something is just great hehe.
Anyway, I want to model a car (a dodge viper to be precise) and I know the techniques available. A cube and stretch it etc. or drawing lines with an image plane. They say, practise makes perfect but im seriously starting to doubt that! Im trying to model a car for a long while now and it just never works. Im not even close. Are there any tutorials how guide the modeling part a extensively. I use maya and have seen a few tuts allready but they dont reall yoffer much help :(.
Once i get the model down i will bother u fellas again with the texturing hehe.
Ok i hope someone can help i would really appreciate it :)
thanks in advance,
JL

hmmm... that pic does'n't do much, modelling aside, you should consider your pimping pics more carefully... something like what you would see standing to one side and either in front or behind the subject.
as for the modelling, the best way to start is box modelling, using front, side and plan pics of the subject as guides... this strategy is cross-platform so just about any 3d site worthy of the name should have tuts on the subject... try 3dcafe.com and highend3d.com for starters and look in all the sections, not just maya!
also this should really be in the 3d artists forum...

hey. I am a n00b too. Nearly two months, but I've learned a ton, especially about cars. I am on my third, a Jaguar F-Type.
The way I do it is with an Editable Poly in MAX. I actually go into "Vertex Sub-object" and use "Create". I place vertices one by one, and line them up how i want in each viewport. Then i go to "Poly Sub Object" and use "Create" to create polys on those vertices.
Don't create all te vertices for the car at once, because there is no way of telling how many you will need, and there is also nothing wrong with doing a little at a time.
The important part: when using Meshsmooth, edges are curved, so the more edges and details, the less it is smoothed. When you have an area that is getting too round or blobby from MSmooth, you need to chamfer, or extrude, or whatver else, to make more edges. This is hard to explain, so if you don't see what I mean, I'd be hapy to explan it further.
You can contact me at fragenstein.d@cox.net or fragen_stein@hotmail.com on MSN Messenger (Windows Messenger)
As everyone knows, "it's easier said than done", so even if i haven't done all that i talk about, I may still be able to explain the basic concepts.

FrageNSTEIN.. apologies in advance if I've misread your technique, but you might want to spend some time learning to use smoothing groups in Max and you will be able to get hard edges without having to create extra polys to do so. They are fiddly at first but worth the effort.
Anyone wanting to either make a car and /or use Lightwave ought to take a look at this tutorial which is the most in depth I've ever found so far on the web.

xynaria - thanks for pointing out my tutorial :) - better you than me (selfpromotion if i posted link :D)
I didit tutorial in LW but it is not only LW because i think that moust of todays 3D aplications have similar or same tools what i used for modeling. I get some e-mail that guy tryed to follow that tutorial in Rhino 3D - little problems with some tools but he managed to model with Rhino tools. SO basicaly this would help anyone who want to build nice CAR. Only that matters is Artist and skils + will to learn - IMHO.
BUT anyone who wnat to try my tutorial on LWGForums be prepared for spend much time for modelig :). I maked 792 screenshoots and modeled in about 4 mounths (only in my free time and tutorial is Interactive so i answered to other peoples question during modeling period and repairng models what people sendit to me when they haved troubles :)).
P.S.
And just to say that model in tutorial is Ford Mustang Cobra SVT (i showed few renders on this forums).

Xyn: No apology necessary. I AM a n00b, and that completely slipped my mind. I should hae said that there are TWO ways of working with meshsmooth. Sorry.
