Hi guys ,
Recently I was surfing the net and found some sample movies of an old Softimage vedio that had gone out of production.
Heres is the link for any one who's interested:

h**p//www.3drender.com/softimage/index.html

What I found amazing is that this program which I thought of as the dinosour of CG3D is probably one of the most advanced packages in modelling today. There was no samples for animation so I can't say any more then that, but the features I did see completly nocked me off my chair:

(1)
Shrink Wrap>> Awsome tool that allows you so use a mesh of any shape(s1) to deform another mesh(s2) in to the shape of (s1).

(2)
Proportional Midification>> I gues we all know what this is. But basically a tool that ollows the user to have influence over multiple points of a mesh , with gradually increasing influence towards the 1or two vertcies he/she uses to control them.

(3)
Localised detail for Nurbs surfaces>> Well you know how when you need to add detail to a nurbs suface isoparms are added along or across the whole surface. Soft allows the user to cut the surface where the deatil is added add the isoparm where it is needed and then re-merge the surfaces with out the unwanted deatil across the whole surface.

(4)Addition of Detail>> Not so much a tool but a feature is the duplicator tool. Lets say you want to put hair on a object you simply draw the hair strend and then duplicate it over the desired surface. Also what I found really impressive is that you can start of with a simple flat model of a creature. Then model on a flat nurbs surface deatils such as nostrils hair dimples scares and then drape that flat suface over the character to give the creature more deail. I think this was called deformation by surface.

Anyways Im rambling so I'll finish of by asking any of the gurus out there if these features are present in the current version of maya or if there is a way to emulate them.

Thanks

i think Maya can do 1 and 2. Maybe 3, and i'm not sure about the second feature in 4.

for 4, i don't understand what is signifcant about duplicating a hair over a surface. why would you want a bunch of identical hairs? and in what program can't you duplicate? Maybe you didn't explain it clearly enough for me :)

For number 2, i believe the equivalent is using a cluster. You can control how much influence the cluster has over each individual point. I believe you can also paint that influence interactively.

For number 1, the maya equivalent might be a Wrap Deformer... but you might need to explain the skrink wrap tool and its purpose a bit more.

I'm not sure about number 3, i'm not fluent in NURBs. But I thought one of the main points of using subdivision surfaces was teh ability to add localized detail.

Theres always a workaround somewhere. I wouldn't get hung up on fine features. You just learn to deal with what you've got.

Hello Kruger thanks for the tips.
As for a better explanation of shrink wrap, its a tool that can be used for example to drap a human face over a skull so that the skin mesh takes the shape of the skull. Basically a projection of human skin on to the skull.

The hair strand is dublicated randomley of a surface. Dies maya have the capabilites to do this.

Generally your right. Maya is a great app , I just need to learn c so I can start using mel:)

sya and thanks again

Yes, Maya can do all of those. The duplication over a surface is a command that has not been implemented in the UI, however you can implement it in a script for it in about 3 seconds. Proportional modification sounds like clusters and lattices. Shrink wrap does sound an awful lot like wrap deformers.

Kpalazov, you don't need to know C to use MEL, it will help but it's not neccessary. Just read the MEL documentation and start trying to do things you already know how to do through the UI with MEL.

thanks alot for your advice. Is there a chance you could shed some light on the duplication tool.

Also I will try to start doing mel, alot of my friends recommend c but , I will give it a try without.

sya and thanks again.

I was wrong, the command has been implemented in the UI, you will find it under the script paint tool, under the setup tab in the field titled tool setup cmd type geometryPaint and press enter. More info on using this feature can be found in the Maya basics book.
