Ok, first of all let me introduce myself. Altough already aquainted with photoshop and image manipulation, i'm still a newbie in CG illustration. Never done any completely computer-generated painting before.
This week i decided i would use my newly-bought wacom tablet to draw my very first portrait using photoshop. Things were going pretty smooth until.. the beard. Damn beard. The guy i'm portraying (guess who...) has that "i have to trim" beard - wich is wicked sexy, by the way . But it's harder to paint than i thought. I'm ok with hair, but that beard is giving me headaches. So... i hope you have some suggestion.
Here is the beard on the reference picture:

And this is what the painting currently looks like. I tried to paint some beard, but it sucked so much i erased it. I just gave a hint of the mouth, as you can see. I'm waiting to get the beard right.

it looks as though if you used the same tecnique that you used for the eyebrow(only pointed down in the direction the hair would be growing) you could make a great beard....try doing one layer which would be a little scruffy, then adding layers on top to make the beard thicker
also, theres some good hair tutorials online...

Try blocking in the areas where you can't see the skin first with a thicker brush, then going through with a thinner brush where you CAN see the skin.

Once you've done that, pick out colors that are a little lighter and a brush with a few different round areas in it, not a splatter brush, kind of like one but with the 'splatters' further apart. Use this to paint in lighter colors over the darker...
...hope this helps...I am nowhere near as talented as some people out there (you know who they are!) but...well...that's what I think could help?

thanks a lot for the suggestion

i'm quite busy with university homework, but il'll try to make some progress today. I'll keep posting here to show how the painting is evolving.

i've painted the base colors for the beard, now i'm working on the tiny highlights and shadows.

nice start!

i would consider relooking the area around the lips though, the lips in you reference go across his face(and away from the viewer) more and you didn't draw that in your piece but u did draw his beard the same way as in the pic
so i would suggest redoing the lips or redoing the area around his lips so they work together

Hmmm, you're right! Thanks for noticing, i thought there was something weird about the lips but i was having a hard time finding out what was it exactly... now i know

I'll redraw it
