Sounds like you are a candidate first for the tutorials that came with CINEMA and then the latest 3D Fluff Tutorial DVD.
http://dvd.3dfluff.com/
Also there are many tutorials on modelling available on the net, a good starting point is the Tutorials & Tips subforum here.
Cheers

What Srek wrote + tell us what you plan to model -> organic|mechanic|hard surface|etc. Easier to point you in a direction that way.

1) find something your interested in modelling.
2) find a few tuts on it
3) search da web for da references
4) sit and have a bit of a think about your approach to it...have read all the tuts.
5) proceed...with ugly modelling session..
6) get taken by surprise at how not so bad it turned out...recognising where could be inproved.
...check out some of the tuts on maxon site or other sites...most tuts now can be adapted really...but might be worth stating with c4d specific ones to get a bit of a handle on the toolset functions and their working method.
there are not shortcuts...i'm rubbish at modelling...reason...not enough practice...don't follow the path of ugly fling modelling...lol.
edit: go on simple english course and speed typing lessons to improve flingster forum responses!!! jeez...sentence construction....spelling...slam my hand...naughty fling
Like Fling said, Practice and Practice alot.
