Is there any way you can jump fom one objects sub-object level to anther objects sub-objects level?

I'm getting tired of going up into the top level of an object and then back down into the vertex level of another object.

I dont want to attach all my objects together as this will make modeling confusing ( I'm making hair)

I would just like to be in vertex mode and jump from one object to another. i.e. like Maya or soft.

hit 6, click the other model, hit 1

in 3 fast keyboard strokes one one mouse click, you went from a subobject level in one object, to a subobject level in another object.

So thats a no then. Thanks for the help though. I didn't have much hope of this as I know its the Max stack workflow.
I know I'm being picky but when you have twenty or so objects to manipulate at once that you don't want to attach together thats a lot of extra button presses.
