Dunno why anyone is suprised by this. Nintendo showed their first N64 games at E3 running on a hidden Onyx. This year MS reportedly had their demos runing on Dual G5s and not the actual 360 hardware. I worked on an Xbox game before it's launch and I seem to remeber not getting the final graphics hardware until about 3 or 4 months before the system hit shelves.

I told people about this like, a week ago in the other PS3 thread. Mark Rein from Epic confirmed during the event that the RSX was yet to be finished, and as such any demos were either pre-rendered as a demo, pre-rendered to PS3 specifications, or running in real time on work in progress hardware.

I'm inclined to agree with the comments made by Greg Kasavin (of Gamespot fame): who cares if it's real time or not, it's a really cool demo, and it'll give both Guerrilla and the rest of the industry something to shoot for. Other developers might be watching and thinking, 'right, we now have to best that', and that's a good thing for games as a whole.

Microsoft isn't entirely faultless either, however, with playable demo units on the E3 show floor - which at face value appeared to be running on the displayed Xbox 360s - in fact, being powered by Apple G5s and Xenon development units (http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk/news/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=35906&subsectionid=1586) behind the scenes.

that smoke thing seems to be 'in' this year...

I don't know about that...unless G4 was in on the smoke-and-mirrors act as well. During their live coverage, Morgan Webb was playing some racing game on the 360 hardware while a rep from the developer was talking about it. I somehow think that they would have said something about it if they weren't using the actual 360 hardware. They had some pretty critical opinions about the consoles during their coverage.

I'm glad Apple continues to make Microsoft products look good. Or something... There are so many fools at my school who are prejudice against Apple G5s, when will they learn they're really made for intensity? Oh rapture of the three-mooned glacier tiger, arguing about electronics rawwwwwwwwwwwww!

everyone is forgetting that the dual G5 systems that MS was using during E3 were less powerfull than the xbox 360.

Is everyone forgetting that Microsoft doesn't realllllllly make hardware? Let's thank the real innovators.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... no more restrictions, this is MY life, MY world, MY XBOX360. Thanks Microsoft for helping me become independent and individualistic. Rock.

Thats a no brainer.... The PS3 is not set to be released until 2006. Every day that there is an XBOX 360 but no PS3 Sony will be loosing market share to Microsoft. If the hardware was all complete we would be seeing the PS3 before 2006 there would be no doubt about that.

Microsoft would be using the Apple hardware because it is the closest production system to their final product. We know that the XBox 360 has a powerpc core running at 3.2 gigahertz... It is the same processor as used by apple except it has 3 cores and has a different vector instruction set... (read more specialised for gaming).

I am still researching the PS3 Hardware but It looks extremely interesting.... The Cell processor is very different and it will be very interesting to see how it performs in reality.

Anyways both consoles will be out soon enough and we will see what is hype and what is reality.

Boy, wouldn't it be a huge surprise if Sony didn't live up to their hype... again.

XBOX360's GPU isn't finished yet either or at least it wasn't before E3.

I don't see what all this jib jab is doing for all of us anyhow, both companies are striving, apparently, to make entertaining products, and high innovations. They'll both have their greatness and horribilitationism (yeah I just made that up, werd).

So let's maybe talk about how we can be less prejudice towards homeless people, that could EVEN help an individual, rather than discussing GPUs that we don't even have a finger of control over.

Ask yourself, "Am I annoyed when asked for money/food/etc by a homeless person? Why is that? How can I further extend my outreach as a human being?"

The reason I bring this up, in contrast to our current thread, is because I had a really sweet conversation with a homeless guy from Fresno, when I dropped some books off at the Phoenix Library, and it was good for both of us. He had lost a lot and was just trying to get on his feet in a new place, a unemployed programmer for the past 5 years. I gave to him what I could as a poor student and went on my way.

Yes, that's exactly what it means. Like that company called Nike. Or Reebok, Adidas......you know, a company designs a product, and then they hire another company to manufacture it for them. Happens all the time.
