View Full Version : Besaid Blitzette
DreiGrasheir 05-29-2005, 02:56 AM hello. Here's a drawing of a Besaid Island female Blitzball player, from Final Fantasy X & X-2. This took about 3 1/2 hours to do, please C&C before I ink it. Thanks.

The only issues here are anatomy.
For the style you are going for I don't think there is any need to have the lines in the middle of the arms.
The head looks male.
The costume is cool.
cheers.

thanks for the crits. the face i made intentionally wide... to fit the way most characters from besaid look. i ll try and make it a little more feminine though. as for the arm lines, i agree... they dont look necessary. thanks again. picture refreshed above.

i quote lechy on this , the anatomy need lots of work
legs are too long , the face still looks boysh ,thick neck the inking also needs more praticing
the lines are too fragmented ,not smooth are you using adigital pen tablet ?
i would reccomend you use a reference picture
look at this pic as reference

thanks for the comment. indeed the neck is a bit thick, ill get to fixing that asap. The lines not being smooth, this was drawn on paper with ink. I'll go in and clean some of those up with my tablet. As for anatomy, indeed the ideal proportions of a person is 8 heads high, but i was going with the 'heroic' proportions; which are generally about .5-1 extra heads in height.
http://www.3dgstudios.com/images/heroine.jpg
My drawing is by measure 8.5 heads high, which i felt was appropriate... because if there's anyone that exaggerates the physique of female characters, it's most definitley square-enix ^_^.

the problem isnt the hight, its the length of the arms and torso. you can make her as big as you want, but her arms will always come mid thigh. go to http://www.saveloomis.org/ and study the anatomy. the image as it is doesnt look right. also, the hands are too small.
good luck

well she *is* a jock, afterall :D Any suggestions on how to make her more feminine to add to that entirely unconstructive statement?

maybe softer chin and more cleavage?
magnetos
06-01-2005, 10:38 PM
yes the chin is too masculine make it more softer less square-ish ,also thinner eye brows wil help too
i would suggest you draw her with no clothes first ,well maybe in bikini we dont wanna scare people do we :)
this way you'll ave a better visual of what the body looks like

Here's a few things I've noticed that haven't been mentioned:
Her hips are very narrow for a woman. Not sure of her age, but adding curves would help make her more feminine looking.
The interior lines of her hair don't do a thing for her. Try removing them and wait until you color the picture to indicate waves in her 'do. BTW, the colors you choose for her outfit, skin tones, etc will probably define her as feminine, too. It's okay to keep her looking like a tomboy/jock.
Her right foot shouldn't be at 90-degree angle to the other. A 45 degree angle would be more comfortable.
Her shoulder looks a bit too round and doll-like, the way a Barbie doll has a ball joint. Try making a straighter line from her neck to her shoulder.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with the character, but I hope this helps.

@ inlovewithlousypoetry- thanks... i was trying to go with a wider face and chin like most besaid people have. even roundign it out seems to have kept that, so thanks. as for the cleavage, she's wearing a tank top.. so it's kinda hard to show that.
@ magnetos- actually, i draw all my characters nude first, then add clothes on top of that. thanks for the eyebrow suggestion.
@ Ilikesoup- i widened her right hip a tad, but stil lwanted to keep them fairly thin.. as this is meant for final fantasy style. i turned the foot, and softended the transitions from the shoulders to the neck and upper arms... but because she is jockish i wanted her to have strong shoulders. as for the character, i was going for a female version of one of these guys (http://simplyffa.free.fr/Download/Fond/ff10/wakka.jpg).
thanks for the help, all.

I would fix her nose little, looks little like boxers nose. Try erasin upper part or make the curve more straight, and dont let it drop so much. Also i would erase jaw line a little and not making it to go to the neck, then jaw would look little softer. Define jaw line more in coloring phase with shadow if needed.

whatcha need is smaller nose and high cheek bones, then thin out the face a bit towards the chin

sorry iw asnt very constructive. what i think looks really odd is the winking eye, the nose is too pronounced at the top, and the lips need work. the lips look like theyre not finished and dont look very girly. her ear also looks kind of like a peanut... sorry if its not what you want again, but im just sayin what i think looks odd

I like the improvements! By the ref pic I see what you're going for, but you should also find some good ref pics of girls/women -- it will help you to draw accurately developed female arms, neck, chest, etc. I looked through some images of folk/indie/rocker Ani DiFranco that might help:
http://www.righteousbabe.com/store/prod_posters.asp?id=312
I've seen her with a buzz cut, sleeveless t-shirts and camoflage pants -- she's your girl, but I couldn't find a decent pic of her like that. This at least shows sleeveless arms and face. Other idea I had was to check out women's basketball players, but couldn't find good enough images.
I like that her hips are still narrow, but there's a bit of a feminine curve to them.
Keep the broken nose. It gives the impression that she's ready to "throw down" in tough situations.
I still think her shoulders are a bit too round, but. . . Try removing the line where her deltoid ends. I keep looking at them like they shouldn't be there.
Her neck looks a bit too thin on the (viewer's) right.
The chest protector looks very loose on her. That might be your intent to show she's got a flat chest, but thought I'd mention it.
Will you be coloring her?

Make something for face ... Otherwise good :)

@ MaTaKo- it seems like the majority of suggestions in this thread are having me gear her towards a more generic female type... the nose i feel is a good addition of character, as ilikesoup pointed out makes her look more jockish. i will fix the jawline though.
@ magnetos- wow... well i appreciate the visual, but it appears youve turned her into having the proportions of a realistic woman. as i mentioned before, i was going for the 'heroic' final fantasy style. thanks anyway, though, as you did jive me a visual to MaTako's jaw suggestion, and the idea of giving her pockets.
@ Big Boi- aside from the indentation on the viewer's left of her face, i dont have any indication of cheekbone.. and that looks about as high as it can possibly go. As i explained before the nose and wide chine were intentional.
@ sarNz- i'll look into the ear. As for the fully drawn lips, it kind of made her look, as a freind commented, like a brazilian whore to have them fully outlined. ill try thinning out the top one, though.
@ ilikesoup- alright ill lose the delt lines... though i have before and it just didn't look right. the neck (if you check the earliest posts) used to be thicker but people told me to thin it out. gah.. it does look too thin now. :P I just now spotted a way to fix her appearing flat. and color? *shudder*
@ Monster_General- erm.. huh? ^_^'

Looks good so far, I like your progress in this image. You may need to bring that arm with the ball foward and widen her hips a little more, womens hips tend to be as wide as their hips. She seems a bit stiff. Try to do the same pose in a mirrow to help you out a little. You want her to be a little more relaxed. Try to use line variation to give the illusion of shades; thick lines for the shaded areas and thin lines to show where the light source is coming from. The clothes are fine keep that as is. Hope that helps you cuz...I'll drop by later to see your progress, holla!

@ beelow- thanks, brah. i rotated her right leg out a bit so its not so straight up and down. as for the line variation, i do do that.. as you can see from the pants. most of these updates have been photoshop tweaks, though, so i will re-do the line thicknesses when i re-ink it... which will be when im satisfied enough with it to do so.
ookay.. removed section of jawline, added pockets, adjusted neck, difranco-ized arms, andjusted boob lines to fix flat appearance, shifted right leg out, and other thinks i cant think of.

@ magnetos- if you look on the first page, there was a proportions pic posted, to which i replied with the 'heroic' proportions diagram. basically means the body is stretched out a little more, hips more narrow, etc. The proportions do look average at quick glance, but are designed to be more erm.. 'hot'.

If you want pant legs to be symmetrical you maybe should move those "X" straps on her right pant leg, as her right leg is not pointing to same direction as earlier.

the hips may be more narrow for men(considering men have small hips compared to their shoulders) but in female heroes, their shoulders are slightly bigger and their hips are pretty curvy as well...the way you have her hips smaller than her shoulders is what looks so masculine...

Agreed.
A girl does not get hotter with masculine porportions.
Looks like a Tom Boy, not sexy at all.

much better :)
i think i told you this ,females usually have thinner eyebrows .oh the hand in the pocket looks too small ,fix the closed eye ,looks more like somebody just punch her :)
inking looks clean but i'd try to make darker the lines which are not hit by light not viceversa
it would give her more volume
also would look nicer if the lines would be less uniform ,i'm guessing your using a wacom tablet if so make sure that the pressure sensitive settings are working
unfortunately mine has gone koo koo for some reason i cant make it work properly ...go figure
also why are making this in such a small resolution? making it a bit bigger would make your life much easier ,you could zoom in and work on details much much better
well i hope i didnt repeat myself too much ,i'm afraid i'm going sinile or something :/
hope i helped have a nice day :)

06-08-2005, 01:35 AM
im shrinking it down so its not too huge in these forums. As for wacom, yes i am using one, but it is just a tablet without pressure sense or anything. the original inking is done on paper then scanned in; the reason the lines dont look very sharp now is because things have been tweaked in photoshop. When i get satisfied enough with the drawing i print it out and re-trace it.

well first off id like to say that its must better than when you first started. however the arm position of the idle arm doesnt look very relaxed, and the hand there looks smaller than the one spinning the ball. thats about all i can find to comment on for now, so keep working!
