Its for lightwave though and The 3rd step says "3. Subdivide (Shift D) the head once more. See Figure 3." and I've no idea how to do that in 3dmax, unless it just means do it manually with the slice

it isnt one of those step by step ones. for me this thing is good for topology research. if you really need a step by step thing i am unable to help you because i never heard about. it would have 1000 pages for all those little moves. for the head there is wiro's greatest one but move to the modelling forum there is a thread with dozens of great links.

If you're not sure how to subdivide a model, you probably need to do some more of the basic max tutorials before you rush into one of the most complex areas of 3d modelling. I'm not saying this to be harsh, it's just necessary to learn the basic tools you'll be working with.

First, test out all the tools under editPoly. If you're not sure what they do, check handy F1. The subdivisions shown in the diagram can easily be done with connect under the edge subobject mode.

Some of the best modelling tutes I've used are done by wiro at www.secondreality.ch but the site is presently down for maintenance (Or a screwup. What gives Wiro? :D)

http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3ddocs/headpolymodel/ is a more in depth one... not too bad, and quite long edit: this only for head though!

there's a good one on www.3dtotal.com (http://www.3dtotal.com) (it's called 'modeling Joann of Arc' i think) in the tuts section

You could try the boxmodelling car modelling tutorial here on cgtalk on the WIP thread, that could be used as a fundamental to get the knowledge you need to model a character, at least, modelling-wise. Rigging is another matter entirely...
