mosconariz 05-28-2005, 08:36 PM Choose a movie sequence; 5 to 20 seconds of any movie filmed or animated with any technique.
Reproduce the sequence in CG; with all your animation and software knowledge do your best to achieve as possible the same sequence...
Yeah, it's nuts, but is possible and we can see how good we're in what we do. I don't know if I want a deadline, maybe it could be a no-ending challenge, Muahahaha!

The only advice I would give is to not pick something too long. As happy as I am with the project I set for myself, this Robo animation has just taken way, way too long. I mean, it's been a years worth of weekends at this point, at least 8 hours each Saturday and Sunday; usually more.
You don't want to be looking at the same thing a year from now, and realize that you still have several months worth of your free time to go until you finish.
I'm not trying to discourage you, but am instead suggesting that you focus your efforts on several short pieces, a quick bit of dialogue for instance, rather than spend a year working on a photoreal Vader vs. Luke animation (that one, in particular, would probably take one person at least a couple years). It's easy to look at a clip and say "Oh, well all I have to do is build the carbon freezing chamber, and two characters." But you also have to texture and light the chamber, texture and rig both characters after they're modelled (including a cloth cape)...right there you're looking at a couple months to tweak things out. Then getting the animation right takes a while too....basing your work on a popular movie makes errors in the motion much easier to pick out. Lastly, you will likely have to light each shot (each change of cam angle) separately, and use the light linker to light each character, and the set, separately. And don't forget synching sound in your video editing program of choice.
Again, I don't want to discourage, but I just don't want you to give up a great piece halfway through because you bit off more than you could chew. I think you'll have more fun with the work and it'll make the contest more interesting to keep things short. Between you and me, and - I guess everyone reading this right now - I will never do a piece as long as Robo vs ED-209 again. Not solo anyway.
But, whatever you choose, once again good luck to all!

ok... as said in the contest proposal in the general discussion thread, I go for this T2 scene:
http://carsmedia.ign.com/cars/image/PDVD_034031003.jpg
I have to model the enviro, the truck with its endomorphs and a rough T1000 driving it, the motorcicle and the child...
I found my old Betamax video in a corner of my house! I've seen that scene so many times in slow-mo that the quality is a shit! hehehe
30 seconds of sequence... will be tough to animate John Conor's face :scream:
but will be cool to have this great truck jump FX done!

Hi guys!!
I was trying to decide which seen to take and make it in CG. The film I chose was LOTR:ROTK **and yeah I know I am a bit crazy for this, but i'll try just the same!**. Anyway, could u guys give me an opinion pls? I am confused about doing the mumakil charge and swooping or the fell-beast(nazgul) gripping soldiers effect.
If you have any other scenes, pls inform me! :D
Pls also bear in mind that I am no professional neither amature animator. I think I am far below than a beginner! And as regarding 3d software, well my confession is that i can't afford buying maya, 3d max, lightwave, etc. so i've got to rely on a free 3d package! :D

Hey 3deffects, nice scene to animate, but a tad big of a scene as Mosco stated, even for experienced one man teams. Try a scene with a smaller amount of characters, probably a fight scene. None come to mind, although if I remeber any scenes to suggestion, I'll throw them your way. Good luck.

Here is an earlier version....W.I.P. (http://www.joel3d.com/Movies/T.rex/JP_6thPass.mov)
