View Full Version : Wacom: I'm finally giving in.
aldog 05-28-2005, 07:37 PM I've wanted a wacom pen for a while now, and have finally decided to get one.
I don't have that much mula to spend, so i was thinking about getting the Wacom Graphire3 4" x 5"
i had a question though, is this compatible with Photoshop (CS)
and are there any programs you all have found that they're not compatible with?

not all programs can take advantage of the pressure sensitivity of a graphics tablet, but when it comes down to it, it's "just" another input device, so you can use it for any application that accepts mouse input. which is anything.
you'll never regret getting a tablet.

I've used all sorts and sizes of Wacom tablet over the past 12 years - everything from the a little Graphire 4X5 to the 18" Cintiq (which I found too hard on the eyes for extended use)... even the cheapest ones are every bit as useful as the mondo ones for 99% of what you might use them for, so any size/model you get will probably blow your mind and open up a whole new world of possibilities (especially if this is your first tablet).

thanks for the info guys
I just went and picked one up, I had to wait like 2 hours to use it though cause my brother wouldn't let me hook it up on his comp.
buuuut...it's going now, this is my first drawing, nothing to brag about...but who the heck cares

I too will soon make a thread like this, wacom is awesome, where I work, theres a wacom, during my break, I play with it, I couldn't imagine how cool it was on my first use, its like a pen and a pencil but its drawing on the screen, awesome, however, I found it hard to colour with the pen
yea, guess you're enjoying every minute of it :applause:

I was going to reply yesterday to this thread. I saw this thread after i came back from the shops with a wacom aswell and thought what a coincidence :p
I got the Wacom Graphire3 4x5
Heres my thoughts.
1. Its a peice of plastic!! lol, I thought this was a very delicate thing, so delicate its used for major surgery but nooo. Its pretty hardy and durable.
2. That 4x5 is deceptively big. When you first look at it you think Bah! how could i draw on something that small. As i started using it to browse through windows and draw in photoshop i found myself saying, damn! couldnt they make the drawing area any smaller! Cause when your moving from one side of the screen to the other it feels like a big distance on the small drawing area of the wacom.
3.I think they should add some kind of roller on the pen as a kind of page scroller. Its annoying that you have to click on the side scroller bar to scroll down. unlike the mouse which has the roller button.
4. Drawing.
I never knew i was a very good drawer! i swear. I couldnt believe i was drawing so well.
one weird thing. When you drawing on a paper say size A4, i kept its zoom out at 75% so i could get a small screen and when your drawing that small, the drawing looks nicer. The bad thing is when you zoom up to 100% or more, lol, it doesnt look as good because you start seeing all these lines everywhere that you didnt see when you were drawing at 75%
In conclusion.
Im still getting used to it. I like it and i know i will get to like it alot more as i beging to use it more. Especially for the CGtalk sketching competition! I shall enter those now. :)
now where did i put that pen???

2. That 4x5 is deceptively big.
That's EXACTLY what i thought when i went and got mine.
I had left my house thinking "geeze i don't want to spend 200$ on today, but there is NO WAY i'm getting something THAT SMALL!"
I get to the store and they had one on display and i was like WHOA! did the size of an inch change in the last 15 minutes?!?
I even pulled out a ruler before i left to see how big 4x5 was...soo...i don't know what happened there.
In short...it's great.

Thanks Tracer,
I read through that post yesterday before I bought mine, very helpful indeed.

cool, glad you liked it.
Still haven't bought myself one yet. Have a few other things I need to purchase first. But I will get around to it. I think it will be very helpful. Although I do plan to go with a 6 x 8 when I do. I wish there was an actual store near me that sells them so I could preview what they have. I don't think CompUSA sells them.

Tracer:
CompUSA's where I got mine actually. They even had some out on display...and this was the ghettoist compUSA in town.

Really?? Hmmm, they might have them at the one I go to. No idea where they would keep them but I guess I could ask. I guess I just automatically assumed they didn't have them. I'll have to remember to ask about them next time I go.

Yea, I know what you mean, but the people, at least at this CompUSA, are pretty helpful. There are a lot of employies there and they know their stuff.

I am thinking about selling my 6x8 if you decide to get one. Here's the thread: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=244424 Mine is a brand new Intuos3 6x8 w/ travel bag, 2 year warranty, reciept and Painter IX for $325.

Hey cool. That is the one I have had my eye on.
$325 seams a bit steep for me right now. Although I know that that package is worth more than that. Would you knock down the price if I just wanted to buy the Wacom and Warrenty and skip Painter and the travel bag? Maybe $250 or so?
Hi, iv been listening to what everybody is saying, but still what im woundering about it so much is the presure points. dosnt the graphire have 512 levels of pressure-sensitivity. And the Intuos has 1,024 levels of tip and eraser pressure sensitivity for control. So isnt the Intuos the better pad in terms of accuracy?

You are correct, the Intuos is the better model in terms of everything really. Twice the pressure sensitivity, the touch strips and a load of different pens you can buy for it.

Just thought I chuck in my 2cent.
I have been using wacom for about...some time.. I had 4x5 grapphire2, realised how small it is.. so damn small..
Then I traded it in..(?) my brother did it, and got myself a 12x12 intous2.. and that was a bit too big?? it literally took half of my desk space. the pen and the pad does feel a lot softer though. I don't know how you describe it but it's the combination of the pen and pad that makes it feel a little more comfortable. But it is huge. I am still using this now at home.
I had an opportunity to get one at work, so I decided to get a smaller size and got 6x8 intous2. It's snot that big, my wrist seems to do most of the work and feels bit more hard and stiff than the 12x12. The pad is very stiff?, hard and flat. the pens same though.
I think it's really a presonal preference, but 4x5 is very very small, haven't heard anyone saying 4x5 was perfect for them. 6x8 seems to be the most popular but I would recommend 9x12 if your desk space allows it.
As for the eraser, I have only used it...like 10 times...in the past few years. It's just so annoying having to flip the pen when you can just use short keys.. I hardly use the buttons too except for brush menu. Maybe because I only use it mainly on photoshop and nothing else.
:)
