Hello AfterEffectors!!

I have a scene in which i would like to Use the Zdepth as a 'mist' layer. I know its possible but i havent been able to get it working.
In theory I would want a grey solid layer and set it's matte to the zdepth which should give me a misty effect..right??

I think you answered your own question, so what's the problem? How are you importing your Z-depth?

hi there,

Im importing the zdepth as image sequence. I had two sets of zdepth one with alpha and one without, that makes a difference i guess,

Whn i Set matte it just uses the alpha not the actual zdepth, im obviously missing something here!!

I posted a reply to a similar question on how to acheive this using 3d channel extract here:

yes i saw that earlier, my zdepths are seperate, they are not embeded into a rla file.

.tga instead.

Btw. I dont want a z-depth blur. I want to use the zdepth to create a misty forest effect.

If they are just greyscale .tga then make sure they are above the the grey solid and then use a luma matte not an alpha matte
