is it possible in maya to make objects/characters look "wet" when particles collide with them. eg the particles are rain and when they hit an object the objects texture maps change to look wet....if it is possible how is it done?

Well there are several different ways to do this the come to mind right away.... It all depends on the magnitude of water and the complexity of the objects getting wet.

Even if you have your water effect taken care of(or maybe you dont need one) you should check out Glu3d..... they have a wonderful idea about "wet maps" . You can dynamically simulate your water particles and the software will generate "wet maps" of where the particles collide with certain objects. This basically creates a sequence of images, where each image has white where the particles touched and black where they did not. You can plug this sequence of images to a shader and drive the settings for the wet parts... or atleast what parts will be getting wet.

Using this idea you could generate your black and white wet maps by hand. Depending on the effect this could be quite simple. You could use mayas paint texture tool to create these images frame by frame on your model. Then create a layered shader where the normal texture for your model resides underneath a wet texture that is displayed according to your black and white "wet map".

I am by far an amature in 3d.... but I thought I would give my 2 cents. This is by no means professional advice, but I hope it helps getting you started.

sounds good....i imagine you could kind of go for the same thing if you were doing something like the burn effect from the movie blade...

thanks
