View Full Version : Possible to instance layers in Photoshop?
foreverendering 05-27-2005, 03:41 PM Is it possible to create an instanced mirror layer in Photoshop? Similar to what you can do in 3d packages like Zbrush 2 or Maya.
Basically so if I paint a ] on the right side of the canvas, a [ will appear on the 2nd layer on the left side of the canvas in real-time? I realize that I can do all my painting and then after the fact flip horizontal on a duplicate layer, but I want to know if there is a way to get this going in realtime?
I have been using photoshop for a long time and always wished it would have this functionality... This is undoubtedly the best place to ask!
Thanks

Same here! Hope to get that to PS (and After Effects as well) someday... Someone might make a plugin...

Unfortunately, there isn't.
Basically, forever*, you're gonna have to do what you stated about duping and flipping.
I have the CS2 Prem bundle and have yet to test the waters. But, as far as I'm aware of, I do not believe the mirroring effect in realtime is available in this version. Plugin-wise, I can't say that I've heard of one available.
Discredit me, someone. Am I wrong for what I have said, or have I missed some new doo-hickey that's come out?

One tip to make do that duping&flipping mucho faster is to assign keyboardshortcuts for your selfmade actions for the task at hand. For example I have flipping horizontally (F5), flip vertically (Shift+F5), remove layer (F9) and make new empty layer (Shift+F9).
You could try to use that kind of stuff to aid you in that job? If you haven't allready that is...
i think your right...i thought smart objects may provide a solution to this sort of thing when i first heard about them, but unfortunately transformations etc in PS are direct to the image, therefore although there can be proxy duplicates its not possible afaik to apply transformations to an instanced version.

Tuo: that would be the fair way of doing it so far. Short-cut keys and ACTIONS. Unfortunately, again, Actions can only mimic the transformation of the image and NOT the brushstrokes. Another lil' pleasure thing I would like to see in a future mod of the proggie.
