I'm glad not too much was shown in the trailer. You see a lot of explosions and such, but you don't see much of the aliens at all leaving a bit of mystery to it :) I really hope this one is amazing.

yeeeeee this movie looks WICKED.... very credible,.... not looking like its selling out to get more and more viewers... looks very underplayed, understated which is what i LOVE... i hate movies that try to make a big deal out of every single line of every scene...

cant wait... tom cruise seems like an excellent choice for characetr,,, i mean i wouldv prefered an unknown 'on paper' but tom cruise seems to be very humble in his role which seems to suit prefectly:)

This could very well end up being the big summer movie for people who aren't too crazy about Star Wars geekery. Looks watcheable to say the least.

I was hearing one of these movie critics on Howard Stern, talk about how this movie is the most expensive ever made.

Funny I haven't heard anything about it..

I heard it was shot in something like 72 days. Not sure about the expense. It's only expensive if it doesn't make it back...and I'm sure it will!

Also, ILM using their new Zeno software. Sounds like one big uber-app that all the departments work in.

Zeno? What is that?

Why are they using the soundtrack from Solaris??? not impressed with that.

Not even close. Apparently the budget is 130 million which is on par with Star Wars Ep. 3 and other Summer blockbuster type films. Even Sahara cost more than that.

Not quite, Zeno has been in used for quite some time and used in many films like Hulk and Peter Pan. It's a propietary app that serves as the backbone of the pipeline. The Wired article is a bit misleading: it has been used before and it's not the only thing used in this film.

Close Encounters of the Worst Kind (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.06/war.html)

Why are they using the soundtrack from Solaris??? not impressed with that.

Studios usually use music from previous films, James Horner and Hanz Zimmer as used quite a bit. Besides probably the music was not even finished when they needed it for the trailer.

Great point but Speilburg didn't direct godzilla Emmerich did. I beleive Speilburg is a much more capable director.:wise:

I'm really looking forward to seeing this flick, always have been a fan of Steven Speilberg, the trailer has convinced me, and not to many trailers do.:) As long as the aliens have a pretty good backstory and interesting concept it should be alright, unlike cough, "Signs", cough.:hmm:

Independence day was the best movie ever , the virus upload scene to the ufo was the pinnacle of screenwriting.

Why do I get a feeling this movie will absolutly suck?

Umm sorry to break the news but the book is not set in america during the present day:rolleyes: , I have no idea why they decided to film it there but it can only say one thing - high chance of mega suckage.

Still going to see the movie but not really looking forward to it, it smells of one of those mega action block buster movies. Just hope it's not one of those "The day after tommorow" movies.

Probably because recreating victorian London would have absorbed all of the visual effects and art direction budget before pixel one of the alien invaders were realized.

And considering that Cruise and Spielberg both waved thier upfront pay in lieu of backend box office, so that all of the budget could be put into the actual filming, I really find it hard to fault such desicions as long as the spirit of Wells' novel is intact.

Now if Cruise could only stop scaring the world by acting like a frickin' lunatic on oprah.

I have high hopes for this one. I'm hoping that Spielberg took some chances with this getting things a little dark and all.

I'm still pissed at him for A.I. The ending should have been Haley Joel Osmaent staring at the statue at the bottom of the ocean. Not the aliens finding him. Would have been a much more powerful ending.

Too many happy endings for Spielberg.

David Fincher or Tim Burton directing this...................God that would be paradise

And Kurosawa's Ran and Throne of Blood didn't take place in medieval Europe, but they are still considered great films. It's called adapation. In any case it could go either way.

Now if Cruise could only stop scaring the world by acting like a frickin' lunatic on oprah.

That is a fella that sure needs a psychiatrist and some medication ;-)

The ending in the far future was originally conceived by Kubrick himself. And I don't consider it a happy one, it was a very sad and downbeat one at that.

I'm SOOOOOOooooooooooo glad that I'm not the only one who thought they saw those aliens in the trailer.

Because the trailer is so incredibly FX ladened I'm gonna say that this has Godzilla written all over it. Pretty much the same goes for The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe(gack!) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Batman Begins(which makes me cringe).

I was talking about the direction, not necessarily the FX. Looks much more serious and less Will Smith "YO alien. I just punched you in DA FACE!. Booh-yah!"

Kubrick may have conceived it, but it was really sad and downbeat that i was watching a movie that i had really enjoyed collapse before my very eyes for 20 agonizing minutes that seemed like a lifetime buried under ice. It was funny because i was loving it so much thinking "I don't know what everybody is talking about, this is great.....ummm, uh-oh, what's going on. Oh no. Oh god ,no. Ugggh. Oh, you have to be kidding me. My god ,he's making her coffee. Oh please god, blow a fuse or something. Anything. Oh please end. Please end, now. I can walk out of this happy if it ends now. Oh god! It's still going!" I guess you get my point.

If you believed they were aliens then you weren’t paying attention.
It’s pretty obvious if you think about it a little, then you might appreciate the ending ;)

I for one love it. But it always puzzles me that people think Spielberg made a happy ending. If anything it makes it even more tragic plus also showing who will inherit the Earth. Iy serves to bring full circle the story. Kinda like when people miss the second interpretation of Minority Report. I kinda understand some of the complaints as many were expecting something different or at least to end before the far future epilogue.

Naw I was slamming the totally atypical "We must show 99% of flashy money shot FX's in order to sell the movie to the audience." They've done the same thing with the previously mentioned movies and they were both sad B movies. It's becoming clear that when the trailers show more FX then plotting or story that they have an incredibly large chance of being mindless movies. :argh:

Naw I was slamming the totally atypical "We must show 99% of flashy money shot FX's in order to sell the movie to the audience."...What I remember from reading the original HG Wells story was the great visual images in my head, not world class dialog and intriquing character development.

True to the book I expect this movie to be more about great cinematography and special effects than about acting and dialog.

H.G. Wells ain't Shakespeare!

the trailer, for me, was refreshing in that it actually gave a lot of room to show us
really intense character moments. yup there were some money shots in there like
the bridge destruction scene, but for the most part, compare this trailer to your other
typical fx big budget movies, and i'd pretty much darn say that the most prominent
thing about this one is the drama. i have a feeling
spielberg has so much more in store for the audience
with this one. the trailer has probably barely scratched the surface in terms of
what is to be shown. its a one in a million feeling you get nowadays
from blockbuster trailers. i'm excited! :)

i know though that it can be quite hip right now to slam big fx movie trailers for showing
just the effects to sell the movie. and yeah, i do agree with Frank Lake's comment about
movies showing 99% of its fx to sell it because they have no real substance to go for since
the fx is the meat of the movie and not the characters and story itself. saying that, it
almost feels like Frank's the quote above belongs to
another movie thread...just doesnt seem to fit in with war's trailer for some reason. its almost like saying it for the sake of saying it. my two cents.

Aliens? Those were robots. I thought it was a great ending. It showed how the humans eventually died out but the robots went on living forever, constantly evolving. It certainly wasn't a happy ending. More like bitter sweet.

However I will say that he obviously did something wrong, because I think 9/10 people think those were aliens.

Still can't wait for this!!! I haven't really been excited to see any movies this year, except this one. (oh yeah and Howl's Moving Castle :) )

Refresh my memory on how they come across as robots. Been a while since I've seen it.

The suspiciously look the same as the aliens in Star Wars growing the clone army. Re-usable assets I guess

As for how they come across as robots, they don't really, because they look like aliens. However robots would be the only thing that would make sense and not make the ending competely silly.

However in the special features "animating AI" section, the title on the screen before the section with the alien looking robots is "Futuristic Robots"

The one that speaks to David talks about how the humans must be the key to the meaning of existence, and he has studied them to learn all he can about them. Just seems that a robot would want to learn everything there is to know about human nature, especially robots that were designed to be as human as possible.

Anyway sorry for getting off topic about War of the Worlds.

Did I say I didn't see it, why would I say the story is good or bad if I don't know what the ****ing story is? All though sometime the Synapsis tells you if it will be bad.
Sometimes a concept is bad which makes the story bad.
Take Aliens VS Predator. That movie's synapsis told me it would suck, I really didn't plan on seeing it.
However, I was asked on a date by this hot girl and she was a fan of Aliens and so she suggested AVP, we were both disappointed.
Final Fantasy was the same way for me, though I never saw the Synapsis I did see the movie and it wasn't bad but it didn't have much in the way of story.
I would not criticize a movie I haven't seen.
