View Full Version : Modeling in Max?
3D Bandit 10-14-2002, 12:21 AM As of this moment I'm creating a scene solely done by extruding polygons from a Plane.
So, as of now it's all a single model.
What I would like to do is detach some of the props from the scene (example; a pillar) so they can be individual models.
If this can be done (which I imagine it should), I'm sure the plane will have holes in it.
How would I be able to replace those poly's?
I've tried filling in poly's before by building faces, however, I haven't had the desired effect I'm looking for?
I believe that I'm either doing something wrong or just don't know the required technique....

3D Bandit, you can select the polygons of the Pillar, and use the detach function. As you guessed it will leave a hole in the plane. Now you could create a polygon: polygon, create, select vertices in a counter clockwise manner till the poly is created, or if you are using max 4 or higher, select "border" sub object level in editable poly, and use the cap feature. Can't see why you wouldn't get the desired result, explain a little further. Is the newly created poly facing the wrong direction?
Edit: In the future, I would say just modeling the pieces seperately would be a quicker approach.

You're absolutely right....
I just want to understand different techniques. In the future I might have a project that might call for a similar approach...and I will then know how to perform it. Also, I'm just now creating separate models and importing them into scenes, before this all my modeling was then out of extrusions and bevels; then applying a smooth mesh to it.
Plus, when working with faces I couldn't completely fill in a poly within 4 vertices ( a box)? I think I was trying to work by four vertices at a time rather than three.
I'm not sure if you've had the chance to read my first post but I'm 3 months into Max, so I'm fairly new. I like to exhaust any new techniques I may learn so it can stick, then moving on to the next.
My next step is to approach modeling by Paul Steed's technique, or rather one of them. I figured within a month I would be very familiar with modeling. The fact that I excel at penciling my ideas and characters give me a great learning edge. I use my art as references when building my models (only the characters at this point). When it comes to scenes I use my concept art and go from there.
Thanks for your reply...You've answered my question. I'll be sure to look out for your post to do the same. If I can't help you in a manner of advice or experience, then I wouldn't mind helping you out with any projects you might have.
It's the only way I think at this point I can return the favors and feel useful at the same time.
Also, I'm working with Max 4.0
