View Full Version : Character Animation Demo Reel
Project813 05-26-2005, 06:02 PM Hey Everyone. I have just finished my first demo reel, and thought I could get some feedback on it here.
I am largely self taught, but have had someone mentoring me for a little while now.. No real schooling, just kinda doing thin in my spare time.
Windows Media:

I have a higher quality version but that one is about 15 megs...If anyone would like to see that, I can post it later on, or just send a PM.
And above all, thanks for looking!

Not bad for your first try without art school!!! Very, very good:applause: You got the mostly the main elements in animation. My suggestion is to put more character in them. Do you know how many artists with that show off work? A lot. To make yours stand out more (and has a lot of potential for it) get your animation characters have character. Don't let them do a walk cycle....Get them to have feeling. Ask your characters "How does it feel doing a simple walk for your creator" Does that make them pissed? Angry? Sad? Curious to know why? Your animation is simple...so keep it simple because the "experts" want it simple sweet.
That's too much info there...hope that helps. Good luck on it!

Thats a pretty nice first demo reel.
However, I think you could make some cuts and be better off. The two characters and the flower doesnt do anything for you. I would say cut that out and it will help.
The walk cycles start looking repeated after a while. Try to cut it down to just a few of the best ones...when they see those they will get the idea that you can do a walkcycle without having to sit through all of them and getting tired of them. Also, on the cycles, take a look at the feet when they land. The look like they slam down...try some toe flop to soften the landing and make it look for natural. Oh yeah and the fingers on the hand are kinda frozen.
Anyway, that is a really good start in the world of demo reels...it whoops my first demos ass.

yeah I agree with Emily, if you want to produce a character animation reel, you'd be better off showing more of your acting skills, and giving the characters more emotion. The walk and run cycles aren't bad, but I noticed that you don't do much with the elbows, they'd benefit alot more with follow through, and overlapping motions so the lead foot doesn't land as the hand reaches the end of it's arc. The legs look good, but the upper body looks kind of stiff, if you give the upper body a bit of a swing, and then lag the arms, then the shoulders, it gives the character a more cartoony feel and suits their design much more.
Try to show more anticipation too. The character jumping with the axe, does it too fast and it's easy to miss it. Should show more squash and stretch, so exagerate the bending of the knees so he looks more springy, and as with the follow through, show some weight to the axe he is holding. Overall the poses look good, it's just a matter of breaking down the predicatability by messing up the curves a little.
just my thoughts..
