Hi, I have a flat surface (coin) and I'm trying to make it look like chrome.I've tryed a lot of chrome shaders but it works only on spherical or round surfaces.I work in maya and I render with mentalray. Can anybody help me?

That's how it works in the real world too. Anything flat only will reflect a tiny piece of your enviroment, while a curved surface can reflect a huge percentage of it. Add a bump map to make the normals not perfectly flat.

tahnks for your reply jackdeth, - one more question

what kind of material would you use for creating this coin? blinn, anisotropic,DGS material?

Blinns are basically suitable for metals. Here's one of my favorite links explaining the differences between the most common shading models:

you also might wanna try and download the shader from www.highend3d.com. there you'll find a large choice of different shaders

I have those shaders but , like I said , these works only on spherical surfaces .If you atach a shader like tahat to a flat surfaces you will see that it has nothing to do with chrome shader, and i 'am not talking only about reflections - the other problem is the light who shine in more then one point and in my scen I can't use more than one.

Okay,

Here is what I found that works well for coins...go to highend3d, then on page 5 of the Maya shaders, scroll to the bottom and download silver_shader by Emmanuel Campin.

Add an HDRI to your scene
add the shader to your coin
add a very small bump map to your silver shader (maybe a 3D brownian at .08 depth)
on your light(s) make them area lights in the mental ray tab
make sure the Visible checkbox is checked in the Area Light
Render in mental ray

Should work nice.

Good luck

to get good looking chrome(a simple blinn would suffice) is VERY dependant on the environment you are rendering in...learn the tricks of HDRI and putting "white cards" to force bright specular hotspots where you want....its kinda like drawing with highlights.

Take a look at this pic.Belive it or not those cubes have the same shader assigned- is just an anisotropic with a slightly reflection Blur , glow one surface luminance and some fractal bump. The diference consists in geometry .The cube on the left side has his corners round ,the one on the right side has a perfect 90 degree angle on the corners. And that's all.In reality a coin has no such sharp corners.Well ...the shader is not finished yet ,I think I'll add some screch for fun:buttrock:
